His tone shook the room. Farrow straightened up to his full height, which was at least three inches over Scott.
‘We have collected what evidence we can from your home, Mr. Gelman—’
‘Have you found him yet?’ said Scott, cutting off Farrow.
Hernandez closed her notebook, stood and placed her pen in her inside pocket then buttoned her coat.
‘Every available resource is dedicated to catching this perpetrator,’ said Hernandez. ‘Ruth is lucky to be alive. Two other women weren’t so lucky. This man is our top priority. Every cop in the city is on alert. You have our word we won’t rest until we catch him.’
‘Two women?’ said Ruth, removing her hand from her face.
‘Yes, ma’am,’ said Farrow. ‘I know this is hard, but we will need to talk again soon. If anything else comes to mind in the meantime, I’ve given your husband my card.’
And, with that, Farrow and Hernandez turned to leave.
Ruth sat up and winced, biting her lip with pain as she tried to move.
‘Wait, why did he let me live?’ she asked.
Farrow and Hernandez slowed at the door. Hernandez opened it, nodded at her partner.
Turning back to Ruth, Farrow said, ‘We’re working on this. That’s all I can tell you for now.’
‘Don’t bullshit us. You know a lot more about this asshole than you’re saying,’ said Scott.
‘We don’t have a lot to go on. No forensics at the crime scenes. Now we have a description, that’ll really help. We’ll be in touch,’ said Farrow.

‘That description fits a lot of people,’ said Hernandez.
Farrow nodded as they entered the basement parking lot of the hospital.
‘But she said she’d recognize him if she saw him again. That’s a start. Once we have a suspect, we can show her some mugshots. At least we know he doesn’t like them to watch him as he works,’ said Farrow. ‘That’s something we didn’t know before. He knocks them out before he starts cutting.’
‘And that’s useful how?’
‘He needs chemicals. Chloroform. Maybe we can trace it? When we get back to the precinct, we’ll call the coroner, see if he can test for the presence of chloroform in the bodies of the first two victims. Say, do you remember where we parked?’
Hernandez pointed to the far corner. ‘Somewhere over there.’
Farrow let her lead the way. His back was playing up more than usual. It slowed him down, and he got progressively worse as the day went on. He didn’t try to match her pace – he just plodded slowly behind. Hernandez had long black hair, which she wore in tight curls, and it bounced with every step. He followed her while she pressed the key fob and listened for the sound of the car unlocking.
An encouragingthunksounded up ahead, accompanied by a flash of headlights.
‘Here it is,’ she said.
‘Some detectives we are. Can’t even find the damn car.’
‘Don’t beat yourself up about this. We’ll get the bastard,’ she said.
Farrow said nothing. He followed her to the car in silence. Lowered himself gently into the passenger seat. Gritted his teeth against the pain.
‘Take a pill,’ said Hernandez.
‘I had one this morning.’
