I lead the senator upstairs to Simone’s office. “I’m very excited to see what we can do together, Mr. Daniels.”
The words are not lies. Only instead of solar panels and world changing mandates, it’ll be his blood spewing everywhere.
“I’m sure we can do great things.”
I push the door open. Vivienne is nowhere to be seen, hiding away until it’s time for her to pounce. I sit behind Simone’s desk to pass it off as my own. The senator takes the fancy chair in front of me.
“Tell me about your ideas, Mr. McBride.”
It’s that moment Vivi appears behind him, a knife pressing into his throat. Luther’s face goes white.
“I think I’ll let my sister explain that.”
Vivienne pulls his head back, only long enough for him to catch a glimpse of her. “Remember me?”
“What do you want?”
“Tell me what you did with Zoey Carter.”
“Who?”
Vivi presses the knife further, drawing blood. “You killed her!”
“No!” Luther stammers. “I’ve never hurt anyone in my life.”
“Then what happened to Zoey Carter?” I ask, standing and rounding the desk.
“I don’t know who that is.”
“Oh really?” Vivi says, her eyes holding a murderous promise. “How stupid do you think I am?”
“My guards will kill you both.”
“Unlikely,” I reply. “They’re already dead.”
Blood dribbles down his neck, disappearing beneath the collar of his shirt. He closes his eyes, realizing he’s out of luck now. But I can see the resolve in his stance. He’s not to his breaking point yet. Beating the truth out of him might be a better course of action. Before I can make any moves, Vivi shoves the knife into his outer thigh.
“Tell me where she is.”
Luther screams, his throat sounding winded and raspy. But he still doesn’t break. I reach down, twisting the pocketknife deeper into his flesh. Sweat runs down his forehead. The resilience in his eyes dim.
“I have to give it to you, senator. You’re stronger than most politicians.” I grip his hair, pulling his face up to me. “You can make all this stop. Just tell us what happened to Zoey.”
“You don’t understand.” He wheezes, his breaths growing shallow. “She was going to ruin me. I had to kill her.”
Vivienne yanks the knife from his leg. Blood oozes from the wound. A guttural groan leaves his throat as I release my grasp. Vivienne’s hold replaces mine, and she pushes his head forward so his chin hits his chest.
“How dare you blame her? You did this. You chose to cheat on your wife. You chose to continuously seek out Zoey. She didn’t ruin you. You ruined her.”
Luther thrashes around, trying to get away from my sister. I grab onto his arms, holding them down so Vivi can do what she came to do. She pushes the knife into his throat, flicking her wrist and slicing through his skin from ear to ear. Blood spurts out, pouring out from the large laceration. Luther gargles, flopping around like a fish. Drops of his blood cover my hands with every jerk of his body. Vivienne comes around to face him, letting her face be the last thing he ever sees. Luther’s body goes slack as he takes his last breath.
Before Vivienne and I can move away from the body, the office door swings open. I look up to see my sisters and Gemma standing there. Her eyes are wide, locked with mine until she turns and takes off down the stairs.
Fuck.
