I glanced up at the middle-aged man. “I had no idea what my brothers intended. I had no idea how many people they were willing to kill or willing to hurt. But I knew I had to do something. That’s why I told Rafe I wanted to come in and tell you what I knew.”
The older man stared at Rafe. “You already had her in here?”
Rafe smirked and shrugged. “I asked for immunity. I just neglected to tell you that she was already here.”
The redhead stared at him with a mixture of hunger and fury. I didn’t like her. Matter of fact, I was feeling awfully violent toward her. She wanted Rafe, and was irritated that Rafe didn’t want her back.
Yeah bitch, he’s mine.
The old man shook his head. “I swear to fucking God, DeMarco.”
Rafe glared at him. “She has immunity. She was going to tell her story regardless. Now I just prevented that one”—he pointed at the redhead—“from using her as bait. That’s all. And this was the only way that was going to happen. I know how things work here. How you use people. I’m trying to keep her alive because she worked hard to keep me alive.”
“We need to discuss this. In the meantime, neither one of you leaves here.”
Rafe stared at him. “Are you fucking serious right now? She has immunity. I’m a fucking special agent.”
“You’re retired,” Alan countered.
“Apparently not yet.” Rafe smirked. “I’m running an informant as I see fit. You can’t keep me here.”
Emilie gave him an evil smile. “Watch us.” And she sauntered out, leaving me with a fuming Rafe.
CHAPTERTWENTY-FIVE
Rafe
I could still see Emilie out in the hallway. She smirked at me when she saw me looking. Inside, I seethed. Had she always been so self-serving? There had been a point when she’d fought for the greater good, right? Or was she yet another woman I’d misread?
This situation was going from shit show to a sea of endless floating shit. The last thing I wanted was to be back here. I didn’t want to get yanked back down into the bureaucracy. I’d already given one life to the FBI. Wasn’t that enough?
And now this shit with Interpol. The FBI needed to work with other governments to get things done sometimes, that was just part of the job, but I wasn’t FBI anymore. Why did no one get that I was retired? I was doing them a fucking favor. My willingness to help didn’t involve an overly pushy, hypersexual female breathing down my neck.
I’d been on her shit list since I terminated our fling in Germany. Now she was on the warpath and determined to take it out on Diana… Lara… whatever her name was. I didn’t fool myself that they hadn’t seen through my story that Diana was just a contact. They weren’t idiots. Anyone could see the way I looked at Diana.
I took several deep breaths and tried to regulate my spiking heartbeat. Because it wasn’t going to take much to have me hulking out. The last thing they needed was for me to end up in handcuffs. That would probably make Emilie happy though.
“This is bullshit,” I muttered through clenched teeth.
Diana watched me warily. I tried to get it together for her sake. She’d been brave enough to come into the lion’s den and tell her story, and I sure as hell wasn’t going to let the assholes at the FBI turn this around on her. She could have easily disappeared and not told them anything. The information she’d disclosed was the biggest break in the Vandergraff case they’d ever had.
I wasn’t going to allow her to be punished when she was only trying to help.
I pulled out my phone and sent a message to Alan, asking him to come back in. Maybe if I offered myself up as a sacrificial lamb, they would let Diana go. I could see the little bubbles that indicated that Alan was typing a response.
Granger
You’ve really started a shit storm this time.
DeMarco
What the hell is going on out there?
Granger
We’re running down the info she gave us. But you have to know this isn’t going to be a cakewalk.
