"All right, what's in Corsica?"
He smiled. "Her one weak spot, her mother."
I frowned. "Didn't she die?"
He shook his head. "No, but she’s gravely ill. If you're looking for where Gennifer would go to retreat, it would be there."
“Thank you. Let’s go.”
Gabe took my elbow. “You go up. I’m right behind you.”
“What are you going to do?”
His cold, black expression was back, and I knew something was going to happen in here when I left. One of those secret hidden parts of him would come out to play.
Another little part of him I would never get to see. And just like that, another part of him was lost to me.

I stood in front of Jennings Tate's glass cell, my finger hovering over the keypad, my heart pounding.
I’d told Tabatha that she could handle the interrogation. Which I thought I’d managed just fine. But what I hadn’t told her was I wanted to make sure he never came anywhere near her again. Her cover was solid, but after what he’d done to her, I owed him.
It was all part of the job, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn’t enjoy it.
As I punched in the code, the glass door slid open, and I stepped inside. Tate wasn't restrained, but that didn't matter. The bloke was no match for me. His eyes widened, probably wondering how I'd managed to get in. I loved that look on his face. Fear mixed with confusion.
“You and I need to have a little chat."
Tate attempted to back away, but he was cornered. There was nowhere to run. I grabbed him by the collar and slammed him against the wall, feeling the cold glass press against his back. His breath hitched, but I didn't care. This was about Tabatha, and I'd do whatever it took to keep her safe.
"Listen up, and listen good," I growled. "I want details on what you know about Rogues, and what you know about Tabatha."
Tate swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing as he tried to find the words. "I don't know anything about Rogues. I swear," he stammered. “Just what I overheard from Goode. That’s all.”
I tightened my grip around his neck, practically lifting him off the ground. "Don't lie to me, Tate. I'm not in the mood."
He choked out a response. "I swear. I only thought about it because I was brought here with no phone call like I’d get with the police. That’s the only reason I thought you all could be real."
I released my grip slightly, just enough to let him breathe. "And Tabatha? What do you know about her?"
Tate hesitated, and that was all the motivation I needed to slam him back against the glass again. "I just know she's important, that's all. Gennifer just asked about my new girlfriend the night of the opera. Said I might want to do a background check. That’s what clued me in."
I leaned in, my face inches from his, making sure he understood the gravity of the situation. "Listen, Tate. If you ever go anywhere near Tabatha again, if you ever touch what is mine again, I'll come back for you, and you won't like the outcome.”
“You’re fucking her?”
I released one quick jab to his nose. “You ever even entertain her name on your tongue, and I will make your life a living hell.”
Tate’s smile went a little evil. “Tell me, was that cunt as good as I imagine—”
He didn’t finish his statement. I let go of some of my control for just a moment. Let loose the monster inside. Several blows in, he was sagging. “I’m letting you go. But from now on you work for me. The joy of this is, I control your funds now. Every move you make I’ll know about. And if you step out of line, even think of sniffing in her direction, I will come for you then personally hand you to your father’s associates… whom he robbed. Several of them really believe in that eye-for-an-eye shit.”
Tate blanched, his eyes wide with terror and his face bloody. I could tell he got the message, so I dropped him and exited the cell, leaving Tate shaking on the floor.
