I glanced down at his hand on my leg. I removed it easily enough with a flick of his pinky. He hissed in pain as he dragged his hand back. But this time, both hands clamped on both my knees, separating them as he dragged me to him.

Bile rose in my throat. My movements were just a hair too slow. What was wrong with me?

When the car whipped, tossing me against the door, I reached for my garter, knowing my knife was sheathed there. "What is wrong with you?"

"What's wrong with me? While we were in the opera enjoying ourselves, I got a notice about a silent alarm being tripped. There are several people in my mother's house, poking around at her things. So I'm going to ask you again, did you tell anybody about it? Nobody knows about that house. No one knows it's connected to us. Just you. I hadn't even thought of that house in years, but somehow, after speaking to you about it, somebody is in my house."

"You’ve got to be kidding me. Your father knows about that house. And didn't you tell me that you have been at odds with him for months? Why am I getting the blame?"

His gaze fell to my lips. "Because I'm starting to think maybe my father was right about you being a wolf in sheep's clothing. If it walks like a cunt and talks like a cunt, what do you know? It's a cunt."

Bloody hell. The affable genteel billionaire was morphing into a real arsehole in front of me. "Excuse me?"

"You are a very good actress. The wide-eyed thing is very compelling. But you see, you've made one small error. You have made me wait just a little too long, made me too impatient." He called to the limo driver. "Drive around. My friend and I are going to get very well acquainted in the back of this limousine."

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

I scrambled mentally to hold onto my cover. "You don't want to do this. This isn’t who you are."

"At first it was endearing. So what we're going to do is, I'm going to find out exactly what you've been keeping from me, and then we're going to go to my mother's house and just see, because my security team is going to take care of your little friends."

In that case, I wish your security team luck. Saff is leading that team. She would scorch the earth and desiccate them all before she'd let them get captured.

"I don't know what you're talking about, and whatever happens, you will be very, very sorry."

The limo suddenly swerved. Maybe I had a shot at jumping out.

I scrambled for the door, but his hand clamped on my foot, and he dragged me back. And then the unexpected happened.

As he lay on top of me, trying to force me to kiss him, I kicked out, reaching once again for my knife. But he caught my hand, and I froze. All these years of knowing exactly what to do with my body, knowing exactly where I needed to be, the position I needed to hold, I froze for a split second.

And then he had the upper hand.

He had me in position, and for the first time in a long time, I was afraid.

Afraid of what he could do.

Afraid of what he would do.

And as he yanked up the hem of my dress, a scream lodged in my throat, and I could hear Saff screaming back at me. ‘Get your arse up. You do not give up. You fight until the end.’

I reared my hips up, creating space between us and wedging a knee between our bodies. Then all I did was extend my leg and that bucked him off. Suddenly, his weight was lifted and I could breathe again.

I kicked out then, my foot making contact with his face. Diving to the side, I had my knife back between my knuckles and at his jugular. I braced myself for movement but realized the car had stopped. When did that happen? “You are going to regret ever putting your hands on me.” I let the edge of my knife nick his neck enough so that blood seeped down.

“You cunt.”

“We’re name calling then? Well, in that case, you little-dicked motherfucker.” He struggled in my hold which allowed me to have more fun with my knife, giving him another shallow slice.

Suddenly the back door was yanked open. Gabe assessed what was happening in the back of the limo in seconds and reached for Jennings, dragging him out. He hauled him up and growled in his face, "You son of a bitch. If I didn't need you alive, I would let her kill you." His gaze flicked to me. "Are you okay?"

Knowing I had backup, I sagged against the seat, my dress hiked up, panting, tears threatening, but I forced myself to meet his gaze and nodded. "Yeah. I just… I don't know what happened."

"You're okay. I'm here."

I took in his clothes. "That was you driving?"

He nodded. "Yeah. Nothing was going to happen to you."
