‘Please, sit down.’
Clearly reluctant to do so, she finally did. On the edge of a seat on the other side of the table.
Massimo sat down too and took a sip of coffee. He studied Carrie, which was easy to do when she was looking anywhere but at him. She looked...well. Really well. Pink in her cheeks. Eyes bright.
His gaze moved down. Her breasts looked bigger. Did that happen in pregnancy? The thought of her body growing ripe with his child sent another unsettling wave of a mixture of pride and possession through him. But underlying it all was desire.
He still wanted her.
He’d wanted her even when she’d dropped the bombshell of her pregnancy.
‘How are you?’ he asked.
She looked at him, a little startled, as if she’d forgotten he was in the room. Massimo clenched his jaw. Her eyes looked greener.
‘I’m... I’m okay, thanks.’
‘Have you been sick again?’
She shook her head. ‘No, thankfully it was just that twenty-four hours. It was the same the last time. Luckily.’
‘How is it being housekeeper again?’
‘It’s fine. Totally fine.’
‘So this...arrangement is working for you?’
Carrie knotted her hands together in her lap. It had been working a lot better when Massimo wasn’t here. She’d had space to come to terms with everything that had happened and to try and convince herself that any desire she’d felt had died along with their affair.
But that had been wishful thinking. The moment she’d seen him uncoil his tall frame from the car on his arrival it was as if she’d been plugged back into an electrical mainframe. It had taken all her composure to open the door and let him in and not tremble when his scent washed over her.
Even now she wanted to let her gaze rove over every inch of him. Was his hair longer? Did he look tired? Was there stubble on his jaw?
Had he been with another woman?
That question made her feel queasy. Maybe she did still have morning sickness...
She gathered her wits to answer him. ‘It’s working fine. But if you’re not comfortable—’
‘No,’ he said abruptly, cutting her off. ‘It’s fine for now. The scan is this afternoon, right?’
She nodded. ‘After lunch.’
She didn’t like that ominous-sounding,It’s fine for now.
Massimo said, ‘I’ll drive us there.’
‘You don’t have to come if you’re too busy.’
He looked at her. ‘I’m coming to my baby’s first scan.’
My baby.
What had happened in six weeks? Had he decided to embrace fatherhood? And what did that mean for her? Was he going to ask her to marry him again?
Carrie stood up abruptly, in case any of those questions tumbled out of her mouth. ‘If that’s all? I should get back to work. You have that drinks event at the end of the week.’
‘Very well.’
