She needed to challenge him. To know for sure.
Before she lost her nerve, Ana got up and went into the dressing room. She wasn’t even sure what she was looking for, but when she saw it she knew that it was perfect.
CHAPTER NINE
CAIOFELTUNEASY. There was a prickling awareness under his skin.Ana knew. She’d seen his hunger because, standing that close to her, he hadn’t been able to hide it. The control he’d clung to for months now was snapping and fraying.
All he could see in his mind’s eye were those huge brown eyes as she’d sucked the tip of her finger into her mouth. Like a practised seductress. Which he knew she wasn’t because, unless she’d employed the stealth of a secret service agent, she was still the virgin she’d been on her wedding night. It had taken him every ounce of effort not to replace her finger with his mouth and tongue, delving deep into the sweetness he’d been dreaming about.
Except the word ‘dreaming’ was too benign. They were hot, sweaty and X-rated sleeping hallucinations. And, even worse, they’d become fantasies of being the first man to possess her fully. To see her face flush and her eyes grow wide when her first orgasm hit.
Stupid, Caio castigated himself now, in a bid to try and cool his body down. She might be a virgin, but a woman of her age would have fooled around at least, and would have been brought to orgasm many times. Even by her own hand.
Heat fused his brain at the thought of Ana pleasuring herself.Deus!
He ran a hand through his hair. He’d cleared up the detritus of the broken plates. He felt edgy. Restless.Frustrated.They were mere hours into their enforced confinement on this island and he was losing it already.
He went out through the French doors that led out to the sloping manicured lawn. The pool glinted invitingly.
Caio thought about diving under the water again—anything to try and cool the heat in his blood. But he’d just eaten. Not a good idea.
He heard a sound from behind him, and with a feeling of intense trepidation turned around.
When Caio took in the view before him the first thought in his head was that he would never, as long as he lived, erase this image from his brain.
Ana’s heart was pounding. So much for aiming for nonchalance. Suddenly she felt very exposed.
Not hard, considering that she was wearing precisely three small triangles of white material that were held together at the front, at her midriff, by a silver and diamond-encrusted circlet, and at her neck by a halter-neck fastening. Dangling from the silver circlet at her midriff, a delicate diamond chain circled her waist. Wedge sandals elevated her a few precious inches.
Not even the sunglasses she wore could protect her from the shock emanating from Caio’s rigid body as he turned to look at her. Shock...and also scorching heat. Ana could feel it lick over her skin in little tongues of sensation.
She hadn’t imagined it.
Exhilaration coursed through her blood.
She’d tied a short diaphanous wrap around her hips in a bid to preserve some modesty, but she knew well that it only highlighted the scantiness of her outfit.
She’d plucked a random book off the shelf in the den and held it up now as evidence. ‘I thought I’d lie by the pool for a bit.’
‘It’s after midday...the sun is high.’
There was a rough quality to Caio’s voice that made her skin raise up into goosebumps.
‘I’ve put on sunscreen. I’m not careless. And I’m planning on lying in the shade.’
She walked towards Caio, her legs feeling embarrassingly shaky. He watched her with such a brooding expression on his face that she was glad she was wearing sunglasses.
She skirted around him. ‘I’ll just dump my things and come back for a drink.’
‘What would you like? I’ll bring it out.’
Ana desperately wanted to emulate Caio’s usual lovers and say something sophisticated like,A glass of champagne, darlingor,A cocktail, of course. I’ll let you decide. But she was no hardened drinker at the best of times, and in this current mood and climate, alcohol would not be her friend.
‘A sparkling water is fine.’
She walked down to the pool, aware of Caio’s gaze burning into her very bare back. From behind, she knew that it would look as if she wasn’t wearing anything but briefs and that piece of wispy material. And the diamond chain.
By the time she got to the pool she all but fell onto a lounger. She could barely keep it together under Caio’s gaze—what would it be like if he actually touched her? Kissed her?
