Nevio shrugged one shoulder. “She thought it would be funny.”
I blinked. “Funny?”
My sister was going to orchestrate a traumatic sexual attack against me for…laughs?
“Yeah. She said it was funny to make you cry.” He leaned in and gave my boobs, which were practically pushed up to my chin by the tight dress, a sleazy look. “Maybe I’ll make you cry later and see if it’s true.”
I smiled. “You know what will be really funny?”
He licked his lips. “What’s that?”
I turned my head, drawing his attention to the outside doors to the church, which had just opened as Enzo, Cesare, and Barone Cavalieri menacingly filed in. “Watching you cry instead.”
CHAPTER37
ENZO
Nevio wrapped his arm around Bianca’s throat and held his gun to her head. “Stand back!”
Claudia screamed.
Not at Nevio holding her daughter hostage.
No, she screamed at us. “You’re ruining everything!”
Papà pointed a finger at her. “Shut the fuck up and sit down.”
Claudia shut her mouth and staggered back into a seated position in a pew.
I pointed my gun at Nevio’s head. Keeping a steady gaze on him, I asked Bianca, “You okay, babygirl?”
“I’m wearing my dead sister’s horrible wedding gown and have a gun pointed at my head, Enzo.”
I winced. “Yeah, besides that.”
She forced a smile. “Oh, then I’m fine.”
“That’s my girl. Now Nevio, you and I both know this doesn’t end well for you.”
Nevio loosened his grip on Bianca’s throat and lowered his arm to grasp her around the shoulders.
He pulled the gun away from her head. “Look, Enzo. I don’t want any trouble with you or your family. Me killing your wife, it wasn’t personal. It was just business.”
I nodded. “I can respect that, Nevio. I really can. And I want to apologize. We got off on the wrong foot at my brother’s engagement party. You and I aren’t that different. And to be honest, you did me a solid killing her.”
Nevio’s shoulders relaxed. “See? That’s what I kept telling Dante! He wouldn’t believe me. I told him he didn’t have to listen to the bitch go on and on and on about money this and the Cavalieris that. And look, sorry about trying to pin the murder on you.”
I shrugged one shoulder. “You had to do what you had to do. Self-preservation. I get it. I would have done the same.”
Bianca’s eyes widened as if to say, what the fuck?
I gave her a quick wink.
Hold on, baby.
I gestured between us with my gun. “So, Nevio, now that we have that sorted, what are we going to do about this?”
Nevio shook his head. “Can’t help you there. Orders are orders. Dante needs her father to toe the line, and this is how he wants it done.”
