Sophie raised a brow. It wasn’t what Emily told her, and she was very suspicious of the smile on her brother’s face. If she didn’t know him better, Sophie would think he was trying to set her up with Jack.
She looked at Jack, who seemed to have no objections, at least none that she could read from his expression, and shrugged.
“Sure, why not? That’s what I’m here for, isn’t it? To be the biggest supporter of your union with Emily. Yay.” The yay was delivered with sarcasm, but if anyone noticed, they didn’t say anything.

Was it Murphy that said that if something or anything could go wrong, it would definitely go wrong? Sophie was certain that at this time, someone had changed her name to Murphy.
And maybe Jack’s too, as he was to blame for a couple of things that happened to them on the way to the stores that Emily had asked them to stop at. First off, Jack asked to drive.
She didn’t refuse.
Then, he drove like someone who was scared of the road, with cars wheezing past them. When she commented on it, he told her that he was driving within the limit. He wasn’t about to get pulled over and be given a ticket because she wanted to be reckless.
Reckless.
Sophie almost scoffed at that. He went from zero to a hundred in the space of less than one hour, tearing off the filter from his mouth like he was in a hurry to say the things he had been hiding.
“We’re going to spend hours on the road. I’m not interested in getting to those stores and finding out that they’ve closed because you refused to drive a little faster,” she replied testily.
“The stores aren’t going to close before afternoon, and it’s still early in the morning,” Jack retorted. “If you want to break the law, then you should have asked to drive.”
Sophie rolled her eyes and she did it again when he turned to look at her.
“And let it turn into an argument? You asked to drive. What would it have looked like if I said I wanted to instead?”
When Jack shrugged nonchalantly, Sophie resisted the urge to smack him on the back of his head. She gritted her teeth and forced herself to be calm.
“Sure.”
“Okay.”
And then they spent an unbearable amount of time inside the car, with Sophie staring out the window all through, trying to figure out if he was driving slower or not. Then the car broke down, and he had to pull on the shoulder.
“It’s because you drive so slow.” The words came out of her mouth before she could stop them.
Jack ignored her, going to open the trunk of the car. But it was empty and he turned to look at her with a questioning look on his face. She returned him the same shrug that he gave her in the car.
“What?”
“Do you know any car mechanics around here?” Jack asked.
Was he seriously asking her? Sophie’s brows furrowed.
“How am I supposed to know?”
“You live here.”
She did not know if it was a statement or a question. “I used to live here,” Sophie corrected him. “When I was younger. I’ve been living in Miami for the past five years, and before that, I was in college. So, I’m sorry, but I don’t know if there are any car mechanics around here.
“However, I’m sure you can call my brother and ask since he’s the one who lives here. Okay?”
Thankfully, he took her advice, bringing out his phone from his jeans pocket and walking ahead to make the call. As much as Sophie didn’t want to admit it, she liked the way he looked from behind.
Jack had filled out nicely since she last saw him…the days when he was close to a lanky college student. He had the build of someone who hit puberty late and overcompensated for that lateness. He was wearing a graphic t-shirt that fit his upper body nicely and his jeans were not so skinny that it made him look weird, but tight enough that she could admire the shape of his butt.
Fuck.
