She shook her head.

“She’s not. The nanny called while we were out. Apparently, he had been crying all day and she couldn’t think of anything to calm him down. So Sophie returned early and got him settled in no time and she actually found out that it was his tooth.

“We took him to the hospital and he’s fine now. She took him home.”

Oh.

Jack did not know what to say. He did not envision that Sophie would cut her plans short to take care of his son after how terrible he had been to her. It made him feel guilty.

Very. Very guilty.

“Thank you,” he repeated.

“All right. We’ll see you later. Thanks again for today.”

He waved his hand.

“Nah. It’s my pleasure. I feel like I should stay and do so more work since Sophie had to take care of Aidan. How can I help?”

Andrew was shaking his head. He patted Jack on the shoulder.

“I’m sure Sophie doesn’t want anything in return for taking care of Aidan. I’m sure she did it because she likes children, not because he’s your son. And she’ll do the same if there was anyone else who needs a good nanny. That’s not to say that the one we hired isn’t good enough…but Sophie has a special touch.”

“Okay. I’ll take my leave now.”

As he turned to make his way back to the car, Bethany grabbed his hand.

“Why do you have to go home? Andrew said Sophie is taking care of Aidan. You should hang out with me some more,” she whined.

Jack fixed her a death glare.

“We’ve been out all day and this is my son you’re talking about, so you should think again before you say anything else.”

She backed off immediately with a nervous laugh and he walked to the car, got in, and drove off. When he got home, Sophie was in the living room, seated on the couch. Aidan was laid half in her arms and half on the chair and the both of them were asleep.

He took a minute to stare at her.God. The woman was beautiful.Even with her hair not caring how it fell and the most casual shirt on her, head thrown back against the headrest, she was beautiful. It was a wonder that she didn’t come with her plus one to the wedding or some man hadn’t thought fast enough to put a ring on her finger.

Would he have been that man? If he wasn’t foolish at that time, would they have stayed together long enough to plan a future together?

Sighing, he made his way gently to where the duo were and tried getting Aidan from the chair without waking Sophie up. However, the second he lifted the boy, her eyelids fluttered and her eyes opened a bit.

The only thought that came and remained in his head for a good minute, was how it would feel if he kissed her there and there. While her eyelids were half-lidded, while her lips were slightly parted like she wanted to say something, he could kiss her.

“Jack?”

Her voice broke the spell and he shook his head, before nodding.

“Yeah. Andrew told me you came home to take care ofAidan. Thank you. You didn’t have to.”

She shook her head.

“I didn’t do it because I had to. I did it because I wanted to. The nanny had to go see her grandson and she didn’t know what to do with Aidan, so I offered to come home. His tooth, that’s what's wrong. But he’s fine now.”

He nodded again, swallowing hard at the tenderness in Sophie’s eyes.

“Yeah. Andrew said you took him to the hospital.”

“Yeah. I didn’t want to go into your room.”
