“So.” Sophie’s brows furrowed, “that’s why you don’t want me sleeping with him? I won’t try to fight for a spot in his life.”
“That’s not all,” Andrew was shaking his head. “Bethany. Jack and Bethany had something three months ago. I don’t know how long it lasted or if it’s still going on, but she is the only woman he’s slept with since his wife’s death. I don’t want you to get between something that messy.”
That.
That shocked Sophie.
Not her brother’s reservation about her sleeping with his best friend.
It was the fact that the woman he was involved with three months ago had invited herself to Andrew’s wedding party and made it her mission to torment Sophie, but Jack, whom she thought she shared a moment with, conveniently left that information out.
Also-
“How long do you think it went on for? A period of time you’re sure about and who ended things?”
Her brother shrugged.
“I don’t know who ended things, but I can only assume that she invited herself here because Jack is here and she somehow found out about that. What I can say is that it lasted at least a month.”
Sophie was fuming inside. He could carry on with a woman like Bethany for a month but they barely had sex and he was talking about how he did not want commitment. He should have told her that he didn’t want her anymore.
She didn’t want to think that he was using his son as an excuse because she knew that he did care for his son, but they had avoided talking about the subject of what happened that night for days, so she didn’t know what was on his mind. Maybe this was it.
“Sophie? Do you have feelings for him?” Andrew asked her.
The way he said it, in a tone that sounded like he was going to understand if she saidyes, made Sophie even angrier.
She shook her head.
“I don’t. I don’t have feelings for someone who dumped me in college, but he couldn’t even do it in person. I’m not that stupid, Andrew, to delude myself that Jack would be any different now. If his type is Bethany, then that’s his business.
“What happened between us was a case of raging hormones and proximity. It could have happened with any of the other groomsmen, but you have them housed in a different place.”
Andrew frowned.
“You—you, did any of them make advances towards you?”
Sophie rolled her eyes. Her brother was missing the point. Sure, there were some of them like Jerry and Micheal that had offered not-too-subtle messages that they wanted to sleep with her, but it wasn’t what she was talking about.
“I can handle the people you have as your groomsmen, Andrew. I’m not that little girl anymore. I don’t think I ever was though, since you didn’t know that Jack and I were dating until you caught us kissing.”
Her brother grimaced, shaking his head.
“I thought I had put that memory behind me. That’s something I never want to see again.”
Laughing, Sophie got up from the couch.
“I have to head back now. We have two days until the rehearsal dinner and there’s a lot to be done. The party is tomorrow, right?”
“Yeah. Emily has said she wants the bachelor and bachelorette party to be in the same location,” her brother smiled sheepishly. “That way, I can sneak out of my area and meet her for some—”
“I don’t know what has convinced you that I want to hear the rest of that sentence, but let me stop you there,” Sophie cut him short. “Give my love to Emily, Mom, and Dad. Okay?”
Andrew got up and squashed her in a bear hug until she was slapping his arms and stepped back to breathe properly again.
“Emily is one lucky woman,” she said with sarcasm.
