“What did you have in mind?”
“Are you free?” He asks again, that commanding tone in his voice.
“I’m free Saturday night,” I smile into the phone.
“Good. We want to take you somewhere.”
“All three of us?” I ask. Shit! Why did I say that? I spin my chair around quickly to find Alex still sitting there, his eyebrows raised. A knowing look is being sent my way.
“Mr. Taylor, I have to go. I’ll speak to you when I don’t have an annoying colleague in my waiting area.”
Alex laughs again. This time louder.
“See you, beautiful.”
“Bye,” I say, ending the call.
Alex makes himself comfortable in the chair. I avoid looking at him, but I know, and so does he, that I’m close to caving.
“It’s not what you think,” I say, arranging the files Alex brought and taking a sip from the coffee he also brought with him.
“Oh, Jenna, I have a thousand questions. I’m just trying to decide which one to ask first.”
“Shouldn’t you be working?”
“I’m waiting for Sara. We have a lunch meeting.”
“Do you want…”
“She’s running a little late. I told her I’d wait here for her.”
“Does Adrien know?”
That’s his first question?
“Adrien doesn’t need to know anything about my private life.”
“He does when it involves someone who works for him.”
My face must change because Alex stops playing around.
“You and Reid Taylor?”
Adrien chooses that exact moment to leave his office. Sara's right behind him. I want the office floor to open up and swallow me whole.
“Sara, you and Alex enjoy your lunch,” he says, kissing her on the cheek.
“But I want to stay,” says Alex.
Sara bursts out laughing before dragging him by the arm and into her office, slamming the door behind her.
I turn away from Adrien and do anything but look at my boss.
“Jenna?” he says. It’s the most neutral I’ve ever heard Adrien.
“Adrien, I really don’t want to talk about it,” I say, still avoiding eye contact. I make a mental note to read the employee handbook tonight. It was stupid of me not to think of this sooner.
“Okay. I’ll let it go for now.” He closes his office door behind him.
