“You’re seeing me right now.”
“I meant at the ranch. You weren’t in your usual spot.”
“You noticed?”
The roads are dark as we leave town. This is not something I’m used to. In LA, there are lights everywhere. No matter what time of day it is, there’s always someone out.
This is something I could get used to.
“I’ve gotten used to seeing you at your desk.”
“It’s my desk now?”
“Yes.” Out of the corner of my eye, I see Gemma shift in her seat to fully face me. “Out of all the years I’ve been working here, you’re the only person I’ve seen use it.”
“Maybe no one else found it inspiring.”
“And you have?”
“I have.”
I turn onto the ranch’s property. It’s a quick drive when we’re the only people on the road.
“Where do you usually find inspiration?” Gemma asks.
“What’s with all the questions?”
“Curious is all.”
The ranch comes into view up ahead.
“Turn right here. It’ll take you back to my cabin.”
I follow Gemma’s instructions as she points me to a small cabin tucked into the woods.
“Thanks for the ride, Blake.”
“Let me walk you to your door.”
“I’ll be okay.” Gemma unlocks her seatbelt and gets out of the car. I do the same, running around to meet her.
“What if you get attacked by a bear?”
Gemma leans back against the car, crossing her arms. “And you know the first thing about defending us from a bear?”
“Well, not exactly.”
“Guess someone didn’t read the guidebook in their cabin.”
I follow Gemma up to her front porch like a lost little puppy.
“You got me. But hey, looks like we’re safe from bears.”
I flash a smile at Gemma. Under the glow of her porch light, she is fucking stunning. It’s a halo around her. Her brown hair shimmers and those eyes of hers are soft as they take me in.
Kiss her.
The feeling overwhelms me, like if I don’t kiss her, I might die.
