She silenced him by pressing her finger gently across his lips. ‘All I want is to make love with you.’

He liked the shiver that ran through her when he removed the scrap of black lace from between her legs, and he liked even more the gasp she made when he pushed her thighs apart and lowered his head to lick his tongue over her moist opening. The scent of her feminine arousal made his gut clench and he wanted to simply drive his rock-hard erection into her to find the release he craved.

But this was all about Savannah and he told her so, not in words but with his hands and mouth and tongue as he gave her the most intimate caress of all while she gasped and squirmed and arched her hips towards him.

‘Please, Dimitris. I want younow...’

He understood that her need was as fierce as his, and neither of them could wait any longer. Pausing to take a condom from the bedside drawer and sheath himself, he moved over her and slid his hands beneath her bottom, tilting her pelvis. And then he entered her with a hard thrust, and she gave a low cry and wrapped her legs around his hips. It was like a homecoming, and he almost came too soon.

He forced himself to take things slower and concentrate on her needs. He kissed her mouth, her throat, and trailed his lips over her breasts that were flushed rose-pink from the heat of her desire. Her nipples were dusky rose and swelled beneath his tongue when he sucked on them, and her guttural moans tested his control. Somehow he hung on and drove into her faster, harder, setting a rhythm that became increasingly urgent.

Savannah bucked beneath him and dug her fingernails into his buttocks. He held her there at the edge as he stared into her eyes, and he felt a connection that stunned him, a tenderness that terrified him. And then she smiled, and something inside him cracked. He felt the first ripples of her orgasm and withdrew a little way before he thrust deep into her molten heat. Her internal muscles tightened around his shaft and with a groan he let go and tumbled with her into the abyss.

Savannah opened her eyes to find the room bathed in the pearly light of dawn. She wasn’t in her room. Memories of the previous night flooded her mind, and she turned her head and saw Dimitris, lying beside her. He was asleep and she studied his handsome face. His features were softer, and his long black lashes made crescents on his cheeks. The stubble on his jaw was thicker with a night’s growth and his mouth...his mouth... Heat coiled through her as she remembered how skilfully he had used his mouth on every inch of her body to give her incredible pleasure.

With a sigh she acknowledged that she had jumped into the fire, but she didn’t regret sleeping with him. She knew that great sex was all he would offer, and she accepted it. She hoped that if they were lovers for the few weeks remaining of the photoshoot, their chemistry would fizzle out and she would truly be over him.

Dimitris moved his head on the pillow. He was still asleep, but he made a low groan. He brought his arm across his face. ‘

‘No...no!’

He sounded in such terrible torment that Savannah wanted to weep. Another groan was torn from his throat and sweat ran down his face.

‘Are my parents all right? And my sister? Are they alive? No...’

‘Dimitris.’ Savannah touched his shoulder. ‘Wake up. You were having a dream.’

His chest heaved, and he sat up and stared at her, but it was as though he did not see her. ‘Eleni...?’

‘It’s okay, Dimitris. Let it go.’

He blinked and jerked fully awake. His mouth twisted as he shrugged Savannah’s hand off him, and she tried not to feel hurt by his rejection of her sympathy. ‘Let it go?’ He laughed, a low, raw sound without humour. ‘How can I let go of the memories of what I did? It was my fault.’

She realised he was still half trapped in his dream. ‘Do you often have nightmares?’

He raked his hair off his brow, and Savannah noticed that his hand shook. ‘A few bad dreams are nothing compared to what my sister suffered for years after the accident.’

‘Talk to her. Perhaps you will be able to come to terms with the past if you stop holding back from your sister,’ Savannah told him gently. ‘I had a message from Eleni, saying that her business in Asia will finish next week and she is to return to Rhodes for a few days before flying to America.’

‘Eleni’s trip to Boston is for her final check-up at the spinal injury hospital.’ Dimitris’s jaw clenched. ‘I know I must explain what happened, but I can’t expect her to forgive me any more than I can ever forgive myself.’

He threw back the sheet and stood up. ‘I’m sorry I disturbed you, Savannah,’ he said tonelessly, in control of his emotions once more. ‘It’s still early. I suggest you go to your room and get some more sleep.’

Dimitris’s heart was hammering, and his mind was full of terrible images of the car—a tangled heap of metal and the front barely visible where it had come to rest beneath the lorry. It was a miracle that he’d been pulled from the wreckage almost unscathed, one of the medics at the scene had said. No one had told him then that his parents had died in the crash. His grandfather had broken the news to him later when his grandparents had returned from the hospital where they had been visiting Eleni in the intensive care unit.

How could he forget? How could he let go of his guilt? He stumbled into his bathroom and locked the door behind him, needing to be alone, yet a part of him longed for the comfort of Savannah’s cool hand on his shoulder. He did not deserve her gentle sympathy, he reminded herself as he stood beneath the punishing cold spray that could never wash away his self-loathing.

Eventually he dried himself and walked back into the bedroom. He stopped dead at the sight of Savannah asleep in his bed. The sheet lay across her waist and her bare breasts were perfect creamy mounds tipped with dusky pink nipples. The early morning sunlight, slanting through the blinds, danced over her sexily messy blonde hair and her slender limbs that were tanned a pale honey colour.

She was so beautiful, inside and out. He felt an odd constriction in his chest when he remembered her fierce insistence that he had not been responsible for the accident that had destroyed his family.

The ache in certain areas of his body were a reminder that he had made love to her twice more last night. Both times had been less urgent than the first, but just as intense. When he moved inside her they fitted perfectly together as if they belonged. Fanciful nonsense of course, he assured himself. Good sex—it had been sublime—was still just sex.

Last night had been amazing, but now it was morning and he needed to re-establish boundaries that had been crossed when he’d opened up to Savannah in a way he’d never done with anyone else. There was three weeks remaining of the photoshoot for his cookery book, and immediately afterwards he had a trip arranged to Australia for a promotional tour. Whatever he felt for Savannah would have burned out by then, he assured himself.

He wasn’t ready to face her while his emotions still felt raw and exposed, like an onion that had been peeled layer by layer. He left her sleeping and went downstairs to the kitchen. It was his assistant Stefanos’s weekend off. Dimitris made a jug of coffee and loaded a tray with a bowl of thick Greek yogurt, honey and some plump figs.

He stepped outside to the garden and picked mint leaves to tear over the figs. God knew why he impulsively cut a long-stemmed pale pink rose and placed it on the tray. When he returned to the bedroom he found Savannah sitting up in bed. She watched him warily as he put the breakfast tray on the bedside table.
