It would be a double whammy. Yes, there would be Jessie’s ongoing shame: the shame of failing those she had tried to save. And of course, the city would soon turn on her as the beloved Angel of the City of Angels would be viewed as L.A.’s Angel of Death.
“You’re the Angel of Death, Jessie,” he mumbled. “When they see you, they’ll run the other way in terror.”
But the best was yet to come. Mark had decided that when the time came, his ultimate victim would, of course, be none other than Hannah Dorsey. It would be so delicious. He would get to punish the girl who denied him, who degraded him.
Degraded.
And at the same time, the person whom Jessie had saved in both body and soul would be taken from her forever, destroying whatever semblance of normalcy and humanity kept her sane in an insane world.
“When I’m done with you, you’ll beg me to kill you, Jessie,” he muttered under his breath. “You’ll plead for me to end your suffering. But you should know better than that. Seeing you suffer is my peace. Destroying your hope is my duty. I will do my duty, Jessie.”
He would destroy both women, and a whole family, with just one kill. It might not be his next kill, but it would be his last one, his greatest one.
Mark felt better now. Everything was going to work out for the best.
