He gasped, his eyes going darker. “You were saying?”

“Um…yeah, I was saying…why don’t we go away for the weekend as you suggested this morning? You don’t need to do any hard thinking right now. Let’s just enjoy each other.”

“No hard thinking, you say?” I teased, catching his lips with mine as he melted into me. God, I loved kissing Griff. He always gave one hundred percent of himself to a kiss, as if it were a full-body experience.

I’d come to believe Griff had magical powers with the way he was able to settle my anxieties while also making me face my worst fears.

Yesterday was no different, and after a thorough make-out session, we cooked an early dinner together, and he’d been totally on board with reenacting a sex scene from one of his books.

He surprised me with one I hadn’t read yet, so I just went along for the ride, which was how I found myself tied to the bed with Griff riding me until he came all over my chest. He made himself hard again and managed a second orgasm before I gave in and came inside my husband’s tight heat.

It was also the thought of how we’d handled yesterday together that gave me the guts to ask Jake to see me in the conference room as soon as he came in.

“Knock, knock,” Jake said, standing by the open door.

“Come in.”

He closed the door behind him before he sat on the opposite side of the conference table.

“Jake, I want to apologize for yesterday and be honest with you. I hope you’ll agree we’re finding ourselves in a situation that is unprecedented for all of us.”

He nodded.

“Yesterday, you said you’ve never broken the non-fraternization rule at work. Well, I can assure you neither have I. When we…when…” I took a deep breath. “Look, there was…is, something about you, and I can’t understand it, but whatever it is, nothing else will happen now.”

“Thank you for being honest with me, Mal. Working at the resort means more to me than anything else. The thought that I did something to jeopardize it was…” He shook his head, leaving the thought hanging.

Frank and I had met after the lunch at his place, and he’d told me about Jake’s aspirations to work at the resort. He’d talked so glowingly about Jake that I’d started to wonder why he hadn’t given his nephew my job.

“I’m glad we cleared that up. Frank talked wonders about you, but I’d like to know more about you and your career aspirations from you, not secondhand,” I said.

“How about we do it over a walk? There’s someone I want you to meet.”

I stood up and raised my hand for him to lead the way.

“Did Uncle Frank tell you I grew up here?” Jake said as we walked down the stairs outside the main restaurant to the gardens.

“No. You did?”

“Yeah, I grew up on the island, and I loved coming to the resort with my uncle. I knew all the staff, and they basically let me do anything I wanted.”

The meek, uncertain Jake I’d seen yesterday in my kitchen was gone and replaced by a passionate young man that resembled me a lot. How it felt to visit my first resort and deciding this was what I wanted to do as a job.

“What kinds of things did you do?” I asked.

“When I was seven or eight, I used to follow the maids around. They’d give me little jobs like emptying the trash cans or making sure the minibars were stocked. The maids were also known gossips. Do you watch telenovelas?”

I shook my head. Griff also loved telenovelas.

He suddenly started laughing.

“One time, one of the maids told me to go help someone else. It was strange, but I did as I was told. As I was leaving, I noticed she snuck something wrapped in plastic into a separate bag on her cart. I thought she was stealing from my uncle, so I waited until she went into a room. I picked up the bag and ran to my uncle’s office, so outraged that someone would steal from him.”

“Did she steal something?”

“No, she’d found a purple dildo stuck in between the bedsheets. She had to take it to Lost Property and didn’t want me to see it. Obviously, I didn't know what it was at the time. My uncle’s face was priceless as I put the plastic-wrapped dildo on his desk, and it started vibrating all over the place. I was outraged when he refused to fire the maid and ran home to tell my aunt. Needless to say, I wasn’t allowed to help the maids anymore. Believe it or not, it was safer for me in the kitchen. I learned a lot about cooking there.”

How had I not noticed he had a little dimple on the side of his chin when he smiled? And why was I mentally cataloging both his face and what made him smile so I could work on making it happen again?
