“Good, and you? How is your exam prep?”

“God, don’t ask. This is my one night off. I’m going to make the best of it.”

As if he’d just noticed I wasn’t alone, he looked at Sam, pausing for a moment.

“Hi, have I seen you before?”

Sam smiled wide. “Kind of, but not really. You were at The Dive with Jake one time?”

“Oh yeah, you were the guy that…” Gabe stopped himself, which was strange, but then he stretched his hand out to Sam. “I’m Gabe. Nice to meet you. This is Zak, Jake’s friend from college.”

Zak smiled and stood up to shake Sam’s hand. “Now, I definitely know I’ve not met you before because I’d have remembered.”

Sam smiled back. “Likewise.”

Gabe looked at both Sam and Zak with confusion. And maybe a little disappointment.

My little romantic poly heart burst with giddiness because it was clear that the three guys found each other attractive.

I made the first move to sit on the couch, and they followed.

“Do you live here?” Zak asked Sam.

“Yeah. I take it you’re visiting.”

“I am, but if all the natives are as cute as you, I might rethink my life choices,” Zak said.

Sam laughed. “Are you always this forward?”

“Yes.”

They stared at each other for a moment.

Gabe stood up again. “Excuse me, I’ll be right back.”

I put my wine down on a side table and chased after him.

“Hey, are you okay?”

“Sure. Just not in the mood to play third wheel.”

“I think you’re reading that situation wrong,” I said.

“Did you hear them? They basically just hit on each other within half a second of meeting. I’ve been hanging out with Zak for almost a week and haven’t so much as had one flirtatious comment. They’re clearly way out of my league.”

I wondered if he noticed he’d said they rather than he.

“Just because they’re more forward with each other doesn’t mean they’re not into you. It just means there’s a different dynamic between you and them.”

He looked at Zak and Sam, who were talking to each other, but I’d noticed each of them stealing glances at Gabe.

“How do you know this stuff?”

“I’m a romance author. It’s my job.”

He laughed.

“Why don’t you go back there and just hang out. By the way, have you seen Jake?”
