It had been sostrong and relentless. Before, it only messed with and harassed her; last night, it sought to destroy her.
“What about warlocks?” Orin asked.
“They can have a darker side and be into darker magics, but they couldn’t do that either.”
His black eyes were intense as they studied her. “Couldn’t they?”
“They’d have to embrace someverydark magic. That kind of magic isn’t in a witches’ nature, but….”
“Warlocks have done it before.”
Sahira’s gaze shifted to his closed shutters as she pondered his words.
“And what if more than one of them is in on it? What if they’re lending their power to whoever was in your room?” he inquired.
Sahira’s eyes shifted to him, but she didn’t say anything. If they embraced darker magics, a warlock could do this alone, but…
“How did they get into my room? I had a protection spell on it. Unless it failed—”
“It didn’t. A screeching sound started when I broke through the door, and I got hit with a lot of electricity when I tried to enter. It stopped once I broke through.”
“It would,” she muttered. “The alarm wasn’t going off before that?”
“No.”
“How is that possible? Only a shadow or something similar could have slipped past it.”
“Could the warlocks or witches bypass it if they worked together?”
“No. They would have to break it, and since it worked when you entered the room, it was still intact.”
And now that he’d brought it up, she recalled hearing the screech of the alarm while the thing was choking her. She hadn’t made it loud enough to alert anyone outside this building, but it had gone off.
“I didn’t want anyone else to know what happened last night, but I couldn’t keep it from Belda. I broke your door and had to replace it. She’s strict about the inventory here and would have known it was missing from storage. Besides, you’re not in any shape to work today, and she needed a reason why.
“She won’t tell anyone else, not even her pack. She’s furious that someone attacked you in her pub. The rules areveryclear about such a thing happening, and if she finds out who did this, she’ll kill or banish them.”
His black eyes riveted Sahira as they held hers.Did he do this?
CHAPTERTHIRTY-NINE
She was so certain before, but he seemed so sincere. It could be part of his game. After all, she was in his bed, but right now he was more focused on learning the truth than getting in her pants.
“How do I know you’re not sending me down some rabbit hole of misdirection?” she asked.
“You’re always so quick to believe the worst in me. I’m the one who scared that thing away and took care of you while you were unconscious.”
Feeling a little guilty about her words and her conviction that it was him, she bowed her head. “Thank you for that.”
“You’re welcome.”
“But you have to admit, you haven’t done much to make me believe the best in you. Ever since I arrived here, you’ve tried to manipulate me into doing what you want. You made it so you’re the only person I can feed from in the hopes I’ll sleep with you.”
“And?”
Despite the discomfort in her throat and the throbbing in her forehead, a red haze clouded her vision. “And?”
“What is your point?”
