After the thing with the nymph, it would probably take a little coaxing, but he was sure he could get her pretty thighs to open for him again. After all, he knew how much of a good time she had last night. If she was pissed at him, that could make tonight better.

Where the nymph hadn’t caused his shaft to stir much, the possibility of fucking an irate Sahira did. What fun it would be.

He shut his thoughts down when he realized he was obsessing over the witch again. He didn’t care how good Sahira was or how much he liked her. No one would interfere in his life or have any sway over how he lived it.

He wouldn’t go to Sahira’s room tonight or any other night. She’d come to him; she would need to feed, and when she did, he’d be more than happy to accommodate her in every way.

Until then, he’d find someone else to screw.

Maybe not today or tomorrow, but plenty of other women in this realm could keep him occupied. The enchantress was only one of many.

CHAPTERSEVENTY-SEVEN

“Are you planning to leave town?”

Sahira shifted her attention from the weeds she was pulling in the gardens to the demon whose shadow had fallen over her when he stopped a few feet away. She and Elsa had been the only ones in the gardens until Zeth entered through the small gate on the other side of the space, easily the size of a football field.

Unfortunately, the scarogs had damaged a fair amount of the plants, but they’d removed them and seeded new ones. Beside Zeth’s right foot sat the bucket of water she’d brought from the lake for the new seeds she and Elsa were planting.

The other garden workers had already gone home when their shifts ended an hour ago. Her shift at the library ended then, too, but she had to work extra to earn more supplies.

Elsa often worked in the gardens after the library, although Sahira never asked why. She suspected Elsa was a little lonely in her log home, but she didn’t visit the witches, and she only went to the pub to eat on occasion or to talk to Belda.

Sahira understood how she felt; loneliness permeated every inch of this place. Even when surrounded by others, as she often was at the pub, she felt completely alone without her loved ones and Shade.

And she’d never felt more alone than when smiling while walking by Orin these past few days. She pretended his smile and douchey little wave didn’t irritate her, but it was a daily dagger to her battered heart.

Despite the anguish it caused, and her infuriating inability to shake him from her system, she always smiled and waved back at him. The whole time, she did so through gritted teeth while hoping his next fling bit off his cock.

“Are you planning to leave town?” Zeth asked again.

Sahira leaned back and draped her arm over her knee as she looked up at the demon. Beside her, Elsa stopped working to study her.

“Yes,” Sahira said.

“To gowhere?” Elsa demanded.

Sahira’s gaze shifted toward the pit and the land beyond. She couldn’t see them from the gardens’ location near the lake, but she could picture them perfectly.

“Into the Barren Lands,” she said.

“Why?”

“Because staying here to rot or be killed by witches isn’t an option,” Sahira said more defensively than she anticipated. Then, taking a deep breath, she continued. “I need answers. I have to know what is out there. Maybe it’s nothing, maybe I’ll come back here or die, but Ihaveto know.”

“They say there’s nothing but monsters out there,” Elsa said.

“There isn’t,” Zeth agreed, “or at least not that I saw.”

“I have to see what’s out there, and I’m going to keep going until I have answers.”

“Do you plan on trying to come back if you can’t make it?” Zeth inquired.

Sahira yanked a stubborn weed from the ground. “I don’t know.”

They exchanged looks before focusing on her again. Sahira tossed the weed aside as she tapped her shovel against the ground.

“I haven’t discussed my plan with anyone but Belda. I had to tell her because I needed to work more to get more supplies; she wasn’t giving those up without reason. I’ve been gathering a stash that will hopefully help me get through the Barren Lands. I have to know what, if anything, is beyond this town… even if it kills me.”
