“No one has ever found anything of use.” The pixie fluttered her tiny wings while hovering before Sahira. “But there must be something, don’t you think?”

Sahira wanted to agree with her, but she was becoming less and less certain aboutanythinghere. This place was like a maze, and they were the rats hunting for the cheese. Except there was no guarantee of a prize at the end of this labyrinth.

Standing here won’t help you.

That was the truth, but this room was more daunting than the dragons when they were under the Lord’s control.

Still, it was time to dive in and find a way out of here. Clasping her hands together, Sahira took a deep breath and walked to where Elsa waited behind the desk.

CHAPTERNINETEEN

Orin was playingcards with a berserker, lycan, and vamp when Sahira returned to the pub later that day with an armful of books. It wasn’t often a group of such varied immortals were together, but he’d experienced it many times in his life.

As one who, in many ways, preferred to live on the fringes of society, he’d spent more than his fair share of time with the rejects from the various immortal groups. He’d gathered a bunch of them to help fight against the Lord.

Orin threw his cards on the table and rose when Sahira slunk into the crowd. “Excuse me.”

The lycan grumbled about his abrupt departure, but no one complained too much since they only played for pride and to kill time. The berserker gathered Orin’s cards, shuffled them, and dealt them out again.

“Did you discover anything?” Orin asked when he arrived at Sahira’s side.

She glanced tiredly up from beneath the thick fringe of her long lashes and hugged her books to her chest. “Yes, I solved the mystery that countless others haven’t been able to solve in eight hours. It’s afuckingmiracle.”

Orin lifted an eyebrow while he studied her. Normally, that was his kind of sarcasm; he didn’t appreciate having it turned on him. “Did somebody wake up riding the cranky train today?”

“What does that mean?”

“It means you’re a little testier than normal. Is it that time of the month?”

“I hate you.”

“I don’t think so. Deep down”—he rested his finger against her chest—“you want me.”

Sahira smacked his hand aside, but not before her eyes darted away. He sensed he’d struck a nerve. Is it true?

It wasn’t surprising, of course. He was pretty irresistible, but he thought he’d have to work harder to get her in his bed. Maybe it wouldn’t be so difficult after all.

“I’d have sex with a wendigo before you,” she said.

He didn’t believe it, mainly becauseno onedesired a wendigo. But now wasn’t the time for flirting with his little witch; he had far bigger fish to fry… like getting out of this realm.

“I have faith that if anyone can pull off a miracle and get us out of this, it’s you,” he said.

“Thanks, but maybe you should pull off your own miracles.”

“I’m trying, but when I do, I’ll take you with me.”

Her tired gaze returned to his. “Thanks.”

“I expect the same from you.”

“Sure.”

She said it, but he wasn’t confident she would. Even if she did want him, the witch would prefer to leave him behind.

However, she’d come here because Cole and Lexi wanted him back. She wouldn’t return to tell them she’d found and abandoned him.

“Where is the symbol in this building?” Sahira asked.
