“Pull over,” Killean commanded.

Lucien and Saxon leaned over his shoulder, but he couldn’t focus on them. He couldn’t concentrate on anything other than Caro draining him of the little blood remaining in his system.

He opened his eyes to look at Caro again but couldn’t see anything. His vision had failed him; the world was only blackness and sound, though that sound was growing muffled.

“What is it?” Ronan demanded again as gravel crunched beneath the tires and the vehicle slowed.

“She’s alive.”

“Fuck,” Lucien breathed.

Blinking, Saber was able to bring the world back into view as the SUV screeched to a halt. Ronan had pulled over so fast that another Alliance SUV blew past them before screeching to a stop.

Declan and Logan jumped out of the vehicle in front of them. Doors opened and slammed closed from another car. Another vehicle screeched to a halt from somewhere behind them.

When they first left the tunnel, Ronan sent most of what remained of the Alliance back to the prison. They didn’t need everyone there to witness Saber’s death, and they no longer required large numbers to stand against the demons.

Some remained in the tunnel, and Vicky and Nathan had left with her family to retrieve their son. They would also bring back those who sought shelter on her family’s compound. Saber didn’t know how many vehicles remained with them, but it wasn’t many.

The SUV creaked as one of the guys behind him turned and started rummaging through something. A few seconds later, a blood bag appeared in front of his face.

Even through the plastic, he detected the coppery tang of the blood inside. Starved and weakened, that scent caused saliva to fill his mouth. He tried to lift a hand to take the bag from Lucien but was too weak to move.

Lucien tore the top off and put the bag to Saber’s mouth. “Drink.”

It didn’t surprise Saber that they had blood in this vehicle the whole time and hadn’t given him any. It was safer for them and their mates if he was weaker.

He didn’t blame them for keeping him hungry; he would have done the same thing to protect Caro. Now, he drank the bag in two gulps. When Lucien moved the empty bag away, Saxon held another open one before him.

While the others hovered around him, Saber drank more and more bags until Lucien put down his window and called out, “Get us more blood!”

The whole time he drank, Caro fed from him. Almost as soon as he got blood into his system, she took it out again, leaving him weak and barely able to see but so happy.

Saber didn’t care how weak he was, he’d do anything to save her as he cuddled her closer. This time, the tears sliding down his face were ones of joy.

CHAPTERSIXTY-FIVE

It wasnightfall by the time they returned to Caro’s home. She still hadn’t regained consciousness, but the color had returned to her face, and her injuries were healing.

She continued to feed from him every few minutes, but it had slowed enough that he could keep some blood for himself. He was weaker than he liked, but at least he could see again and wasn’t on the verge of passing out.

Her heart beat a steady rhythm, and her shallow breaths moved her chest. He rested his hand over her heart and smiled at its reassuring pulse.

Ronan pulled up in front of the house and parked the SUV. They’d already discussed that Saber would remain with Caro while Ronan and the others returned to secure the tunnels.

Ronan offered to leave men with them to ensure their safety, but Saber preferred to be alone with her. They needed this time together and would be safe. They had security and plenty of traps to ensure that.

Besides, Ronan and the others needed as many with them as they could get while they worked to reestablish some normalcy to their lives and secured the tunnels. The surviving hunters from the Arizona compound would also return home soon.

From the Alliance members they left behind to guard the injected, they’d learned all those infected with the demon blood had returned to their old selves. At least they would add to their numbers, but not much.

The demons were gone, but there was still a home to rebuild and Savages to keep in check. After the drastic hit their numbers had taken against the demons, the Alliance couldn’t afford to leave anyone here with them.

Saber opened his door and stepped out of the vehicle with Caro in his arms. Earlier, he believed neither of them would live to see this night, yet they now stood within its embrace. The air was crisp and clear; as he inhaled it deeply, he appreciated it more.

“We’ll return to the prison while you and your mate heal,” Ronan said. “You know where to find us; call if you need anything, and we’ll be here.”

“Thank you,” Saber replied. “I’ll let you know when I can set the explosives in those tunnels.”
