Now, she would die without ever knowing he loved her. He always would and was sure he had since she kicked his nuts into his chest.

It was a weird time to fall in love with someone, but he’d never been normal, and despite his suffering, he was amused and impressed by her. She’d done more than bash his nuts; she’d also battered his walls and somehow slipped inside without him realizing it.

He tried to whisper the words into her mind, but she remained blocked though he’d finally opened himself to her. He could sense her suffering through their bond but couldn’t talk to her.

Saber opened his mouth to tell her how he felt and bit back the words. They would give Kirkau more incentive to torture her if he said them.

He couldn’t let his selfishness be the cause of that. After all these years, he finally regretted his actions and cursed himself for his stupidity. He should have told her, but if they got out of this, he might have the chance to do so.

Jerking against his chains again, something else gave way in one of his arms, and his legs finally regained their full feeling. The color seeping through his skin and taking him over made him stronger as the skin on his hands peeled away beneath the manacles.

When Kirkau snapped another one of her fingers, Caro didn’t make a sound, but she flinched. Saber threw himself forward, and the manacle around his right wrist tore away more of his flesh to expose his muscle as he twisted his hand to rip it free.

Kirkau chortled as he gave Saber a disdainful look. “Seize him.”

CHAPTERTHIRTY-SEVEN

When Savages rushed toward him,Saber grasped the cuff he’d shed and jerked it forward. He tore the bolt free of the ground and swung the thick metal cuff at the Savages.

The cuff bashed three in the face; it sliced open their skin, and their blood spilled free. That didn’t deter the others, and as they came at him in a rush, he released the cuff and turned his attention to his other wrist.

Gritting his teeth, he twisted his wrist until it snapped, and his skin peeled away as he wrenched his other hand free. His feet remained shackled, but when he lunged toward Kirkau and Caro, the heavy metal chair scraped across the ground behind him.

He made it three feet before the horde of Savages pounced on him. Five landed on his back, clawed at his face, and shredded his flesh. He didn’t try to stop them as he struggled to remain standing beneath their weight and trudged toward his mate.

Kirkau laughed as he clasped Caro’s throat and lifted her until she hung in the air. Her toes dangled above the ground, and the chains around her ankles rattled beneath her. His fingers constricted on her windpipe as her face turned red and her hands grasped Kirkau’s.

Caro labored to breathe as the demon’s hold cut off her air supply. Her lungs burned, and she couldn’t stop the awful wheezing sounds she emitted every time her lungs sought oxygen.

Spinning, she kicked at the monster, but he laughed as he caught her leg and sank his claws into her thigh. She choked back a cry as he tore into flesh and muscle while dragging his fingers across her leg and toward each other.

This was far from the position she wanted to be in, but relief filled her when she saw her sword on the ground behind the chair. She had no idea why the demons had left the weapon so close, probably to torture her with it, but maybe she could get to it.

That didn’t seem likely as all around them more Savages and demons emerged from the shadows. The scent of blood, the excitement of the fight, and the possibility of impending death were like the Pied Piper luring them forth.

Nausea twisted in her belly as their thirst for death and destruction pulsated in the air until it vibrated the cavern and pulsed through her body. These repulsivethingswere the worst form of life on this planet.

Using his claws in her legs, Kirkau spun her back toward where Saber was laboring to escape the Savages trying to bring him down. The scent of his blood on the air and the suffering he endured as they punched, kicked, and bit into him brought tears to her eyes.

She blinked those tears away; the bastard holding her couldn’t think they were because of the torment he was inflicting on her. Her physical agony was still intense, but it was nothing compared to the melancholy pummeling her.

And she wouldn’t give in to the hopelessness trying to engulf her. Yes, they were vastly outnumbered and at the mercy of these things, but they weren’t dead yet. And Saber had proven there was a way to break free.

With renewed vigor, she kicked at Kirkau. She ignored the sensation of his claws tearing through her flesh as she sought to kick this motherfucker anywhere she could.

Around them, the chatter of hundreds of Savages and demons filled the air as they emerged from the shadows like bats from a cave. The dim light flickered over hundreds of them as they laughed, screamed, and hunted.

Why are there so many of these monsters?

But the demons had been working to recruit, forcing others to join them, and for some vampires, it was easier to give in to their bloodlust than to fight it.

When the Savages succeeded in bringing Saber to his knees, rage flooded Caro’s veins. Grasping Kirkau’s wrist, she squeezed as she dug her short nails into his moist flesh.

The monster laughed as the same black and red color covering Saber seeped across her hand, up her arms, and through her. She couldn’t see where it moved through the rest of her body, but it flooded her with strength as it spread further.

Saber rolled beneath the pile, taking some of the Savages with him and flinging others aside. Her heart jumped when she lost him beneath the mass of monsters crawling over him.

The Savages were having a blast, but the demons hung back, watching the show. It was as if they believed all of this was beneath them; as far as Caro was concerned, there was slimy, filthy bacteria climbing through pond scum right now who were on a higher level than those things.
