Plus, the dead demon and Savages in the storm drain were a good indicator someone powerful was nearby.

The demons and Savages expected them to be around, and they already knew Willow had a sword, so they wouldn’t be surprised to see hers. Plus, she was someone theyreallywanted too. She’d kept that sword from them, and they were eager to get it back.

The four of them would go to the city tonight but wouldn’t do much while there. They needed the Savages to see them with the swords and report to their masters.

Seeing so many swords with stones would lure the demons into following them… or, at least, that’s what they hoped. If not, they were doing a whole lot of work for nothing.

It was a terrifying prospect.

After tonight, half of their numbers would go into hiding around the property, in the woods, and the bunker with enough blood for two weeks. If it took the demons that long to attack, it would be miserable for them, but they’d get through it.

When Saber finished with the mine, he marked it on the map before radioing it in. They returned to her apartment, cleaned themselves, and had sex like it was the last time, which it might be.

They didn’t expect anything to go wrong tonight; they weren’t going there to fight. They’d have to kill some Savages if they encountered them, but they expected it to be a simple mission.

She and Saber barely spoke as he drove her car toward White Bridge. Declan and Willow were also on their way but had taken a different vehicle.

Declan and Willow would be the ones to “accidentally” lead them back to her house. Saber didn’t think the demons would buy it if he was the one to do it.

The demons knew Declan and Willow a little, but not as well as they knew him and his reputation. He wouldn’t fuck up like that, few members of the Alliance would, but it was bound to happen on occasion. They’d found the compound somehow.

To the Savages and demons, it should look like nothing more than a divide-and-conquer mission. The demons would believe it if Declan and Willow didn’t make it obvious. And two cars would make sense as they’d park in different areas and enter the city from those locations… or so they all hoped.

CHAPTERTWENTY-THREE

Once they madeit to White Bridge and exited the car, she and Saber stayed mostly in the shadows and were careful not to draw too much attention to themselves. They could have pulled off wearing the swords if there was some cosplay thing going on, or if it was Halloween, but neither of those were true.

Neither she nor Saber wanted to deal with the police, even if they could send them on their merry way with relative ease. It was a hassle they’d prefer to avoid.

While staying mostly out of the public eye, they strolled through the waterfront section of the city. They used the buildings and shadows to help keep them hidden but drew the attention of some people.

Those people mostly gave them strange looks, openly admired Saber, or leered at her, but none ran away, and she didn’t see anyone pull out their phones to call the police. So far, they were attracting enough attention but not so much to cause a scene.

They didn’t see Willow and Declan, but that was part of the plan. They were on their mission to attract the right amount of attention while also seeking out Savages to follow them from there.

After a couple of hours and many winding trips down side streets and alleys, Saberfinallyscented rot on the air. When his steps slowed, so did Caro’s.

They’d left the busier waterfront area behind and were on a quiet side street with a single bar toward the end and a restaurant in the middle. Light poured from the only two open establishments. It spilled across the sidewalk and street, with a few cars parked along the curbs.

The scents of cooking meat and humans mingled in the air, but neither were strong enough to drown out the fetid, garbage aroma of a nearby Savage. Saber listened for the sound of approaching footsteps, but the laughter of a group of friends and the hum of an approaching vehicle were the only noises.

The friends turned to the bar doorway. A second later, when the door opened, the beat of music increased, as did the din of conversation, until the door closed again.

They continued walking as Saber glanced around but didn’t see anyone on the street. Then, recalling what happened to Caro, his gaze fell.

He gripped her arm, pulling her to a stop a few feet away from the roadside storm drain. With no cars parked over them, the drain grates were clearly visible.

Holding up a hand, he tried to reestablish a connection to Caro through their bond. Instead, he came up against a wall as she shut him out.

Gritting his teeth, Saber buried his irritation over this discovery. He’d been keeping her shut out but hadn’t realized she was doing the same. It shouldn’t annoy him that she was doing the same thing as him; it did.

He was the one who was supposed to be closed off, not her. He shouldn’t expect her to be open to him when he wasn’t to her, but he did. Yep, he was an asshole who couldn’t communicate with his mate when necessary.

He refused to admit finding her shut off hurt, but a pang tugged at his heart. Saber resisted his urge to rub his chest right over the beating organ.

Taking a deep breath, he held up his hand to indicate for her to stay here. She opened her mouth to say something but closed it again. She glared at him before nodding.

He crept closer to the drain and was only a few feet away when a face emerged from the shadows below. Red eyes blinked at him, and a snarl curved the Savage’s mouth as it bared its fangs and smiled.
