Saber!

His name blazed across her mind as something fell over the light, and she was thrown back into complete darkness.

Noooooooo!

She tried to push herself higher so she could get a better position to reach for the light, but it was nearly impossible as she was wedged firmly between the rocks. All she could do was fist her hand and beat against the wall.

She wantedout! She couldn’t take one more second of being trapped beneath this debris. It was too much. It was all too much!

The screams rebounded in her head as she begged to be able to move again. She couldn’t stay here anymore. She’d been buried alive.

But at least I’m still alive.

Are you?

Maybe you’re dead and this is Hell.

It wasn’t the first time the insidious possibility occurred to her, and it only made her mind creep a little closer to the edge of fracturing. She had no idea what she could have done to be trapped in Hell; maybe killing demons was a sin, and if so, she still would have done it.

Was she dead? Was any of this real?

She closed her eyes, or at least she believed she shut them. It was just as dark whether they were opened or closed. Caro tried to breathe through the impending insanity, but her heart hammered her ribs as adrenaline coursed through her starved body.

If you were dead, you wouldn’t still feel Saber.

She didn’t know if that was true or not; maybe it was some other torment of Hell. But, if it was true, she couldn’t lie here and give up. She had to do everything she could to get back to him.

Shoving forward, she finally managed to push beyond the rocks she’d wedged herself between. Her fingers stretched for the light again, but she found only solid rock.

It had been a figment of her rapidly fracturing mind, but it wouldn’t stop her. Tearing at the rocks, she clawed her way forward with renewed intensity.

Real or not, that light had given her hope, and she would feel the sun’s rays on her face again. Shewouldfind Saber.

A creaking sound came from all around her a second before the rocks collapsed on top of her. Something in an arm and leg broke. Their weight crushed the air from her chest as her ribs shattered.

A scream resonated through her head as agony blistered across her nerve endings. Before she lost consciousness, she knew she didn’t have enough blood or strength left to heal from this.

There would be no escaping her tomb.

CHAPTERFIFTY-SIX

Saber had beenfurious many times in his life, but now it boiled inside him like lava in a volcano getting ready to blow. It rose higher and higher toward the surface as he clawed at the rocks and battered his prison until his blood ran freely and his bones broke.

He couldn’t feel his hands anymore as he tore away rocks, but every time he pulled one out, another fell into its place. With a roar muffled by the tons of rock and dirt surrounding him, he smashed at the stones again.

He couldn’t sense Caro through their bond. In the beginning, and for a while afterward, he felt her out there, but now she was gone.

It was as if their connection had completely severed as if she didn’t exist anymore. As if she was… dead.

But that couldn’t be. He couldn’t have lost her! Not after he finally found her; not after he finally realized how much she meant to him.

He never got to tell her he loved her; they never got to fully share their lives. Life was unfair; he’d always known it, but this was the cruelest joke it had ever pulled on him, and he wanted to killeverythinghe could to get to her.

But there were only rocks to kill here, and they were nowhere near as satisfying as ripping into flesh.

He pummeled the walls and tore away rocks and stone. The sounds coming from him were more than animal; they were the sounds of a demon, a man on the edge, and someone who would burn this world if they got the chance.

WHERE THE FUCK IS SHE?
