The demon must have come to the same conclusion as her; he ripped the blade free and turned his attention to Brie. When the demon swung down with Brie’s sword blade, Caro lifted hers to deflect the blow.

They crashed against each other with a shower of sparks, and the demon’s blade shot up as Brie threw herself on top of Asher.

As the demon recovered his hold and stance, another blade arced out and sliced across the creature’s throat. Blood sprayed from the creature’s neck as its head was effectively severed.

Its head landed on the rocks with a plop before rolling a few feet and erupting into flames. The demon’s still-standing body caught fire before turning to ash.

Brie’s sword clattered when it hit the ground, and another demon pounced on Caro’s back.

CHAPTERFORTY-SEVEN

Saber threwhimself forward and away from the demons closing in on him as the one on Caro’s back drove her into the ground and bashed her forehead into the earth. Blood broke free, she tried to roll, but it seized her hair and lifted her head to smash it again.

“Caro!” Saber shouted.

A demon lunged out of the masses at him, but he dodged its claws as he raced toward Caro. Lifting his sword, he went to plunge it into the creature’s back, but it shoved off her and launched itself onto the ceiling.

Saber took Caro’s hand and pulled her to her feet. Blood smeared her forehead from where the skin had broken open, and a bruise was already forming, but her eyes remained clear and her feet steady.

“Asher!” Brie cried.

Brie grasped her mate’s shoulder and turned him over. Asher’s hands covered his chest as he sought to staunch the blood flowing from him, but it wasn’t helping.

“Get your sword!” Saber commanded.

He understood her need to help her mate, but the best way to protect him was to reclaim her weapon. Brie didn’t seem to hear him at first, and then her eyes darted frantically around as she searched for her blade.

“It’s okay. It’s okay,” Brie repeated as she secured her sword at her side and rested her hands over Asher’s.

The increased shrieks of the demons coming toward them drowned out most of her words. They had to get Asher up and out of here, or hewoulddie if they didn’t.

Keeping his sword in hand, Saber bent and gripped Asher under the arm. Brie grabbed her sword and jumped up as Saber hauled his brother-in-law to his feet.

As Brie rose, their swords clashed together. When they did, a spark of power raced from their blades and into his arm. The power arc was so strong it quivered the muscles in his arm as his hand clamped around the hilt.

When his sister’s awe-filled eyes met his, he knew she’d felt it too. They stared at each other before Saber shifted his attention to the stone. A dim glow emanated from its center.

“Shit,” he breathed. “Caro put your sword against ours.”

Saber doubted demons wanted anything to do with the blades and would avoid them if possible. Caro frowned at him as she edged away from the demons prowling toward them. One scampered over their heads and went for Cabo and Zina.

Caro lifted her sword and brought it closer to theirs. The second their three blades touched, power coursed between them, the demons’ screaming increased, and the stones glowed brighter.

“Zina!” Cabo shouted.

Saber and Brie turned as the large, black man pulled Zina from beneath a demon. It was too late, they could all see the gaping hole where her heart once beat, but he flung Zina’s body over his shoulder as he punched another demon in the chest.

“Run, Cabo!” Brie shouted. “Get her out of here, and you go too!”

When Cabo’s red eyes met Brie’s, Saber saw the man’s unwillingness to leave his sister behind. He admired it, but if Cabo didn’t go, he would die.

“Don’t let this be her final burial place!” Brie yelled.

Cabo stood there before nodding. Though two demons surrounded him, he lowered his shoulder and charged through them. He didn’t escape unscathed as the demons tore at his sides and shredded his flesh, but he returned to the tunnel with Zina.

A few seconds later, Ronan and some of the others arrived. Saber hadn’t believed it possible, but the demons’ screams grew louder.

Everyone who controlled a stone was here, and those stones needed to be together. They werefarmore powerful that way; the demons didn’t like it, but they didn’t retreat.
