“I think so,” Brian replied. “I’m getting something from Saber, but not Caro.”

“I hope she’s not dead,” Brie whispered.

“Like I said, there’s a lot of souls around them. They could be throwing me off.”

Ronan glanced back at the army following them. Once beneath the earth, they would be funneled like rats toward the death and destruction waiting for them.

If there were enough Savages and demons around Saber and Caro to throw off Brian’s ability, they were most likely in a large, open area. They’d be able to stand and fight there if that was the case.

Getting there alive would be the problem.

From the second Declan called to report Saber and Caro were taken almost two hours ago, he’d known they would have to go after them. They couldn’t leave a member of the Alliance, and someone who helped them, behind.

This wasn’t his first choice for facing the demons, but this day had been coming for centuries. And now it was time to put an end to all of this.

Everything in Caro hurt. Her toenails and hair throbbed as she kept her head bowed and listened to the conversation swirling around her.

She kept her breathing steady as she commanded herself to remain still and not react to anything. She’d give anything to shift to alleviate her discomfort, but they would know she was awake if she moved.

And the torture would soon follow. She could remain still for however long it took to avoid that.

They might start attacking her before she indicated she was awake, but for now, they were leaving her and Saber alone. She didn’t know how much time they had before that changed.

“You’re such a disappointment,” Kirkau said.

Saber shrugged the best he could with his arms chained behind him. He stretched his legs casually before him, but the chains pulled taut before he could fully extend them.

Leaning back in the chair, he smiled at Kirkau as his vision finally returned. Instigating the demon wasn’t the best way to handle this, but he wouldnotcower before this monster.

It was easy not to when he was the only one dealing with the fucker, but once they realized Caro was awake, it would be an entirely different ball game. For now, he could give the metaphorical finger since he couldn’t see the one behind Saber’s back.

In all honesty, if it was just him, he wouldn’t care about what was to come. Yes, they were going to carve him into small pieces before killing him, but death wasn’t the worst thing in this world.

There were far more horrible things one could endure, like the loss of all those he loved andhimself. His soul shattered the day they murdered his mother and he lost his father. After years of being a soulless monstrosity, he’d finally pieced what remained of it together, but he’d never be the same man.

That man was good, kind, and caring. The one he built himself into was cold, relentless, and indifferent to the world. He wasn’t indifferent to Caro though.

Unwilling to give anything away, he kept his gaze focused on Kirkau. Caro was doing a good job of pretending to still be knocked out, but it was only a matter of time before Kirkau’s attention shifted to her. And once it did, things would get ugly.

CHAPTERTHIRTY-FOUR

“I supposeI can thank you for bringing the stones back to me, especiallymystone,” Kirkau said.

His insidious voice crept into the soul and awoke a fear that existed when predators hunted humans and people lived in caves and hunted for food; it was the voice of evil. It was the serpent offering Eve the apple, the boogeyman, and the predators that drove humans to their knees while they begged for mercy.

It would not make him plead. Saber kept his face impassive as the demon liftedhissword from where someone had leaned it against the wall.

“How do you know it’s yours?” Saber inquired.

Kirkau caressed the sword as he studied it. “I just know.”

He wasn’t surprisedhisstone belonged to the most powerful demon he’d ever encountered. It made sense to him; he wasn’t the most powerful vampire, that title went to Ronan, but his soul was more malevolent than the other Alliance members. Of course, he and Kirkau would share this connection.

There was a time when he would have considered this monstrosity almost a friend. Except, he’d never kid himself into believing the demons considered anyone a friend, not even each other.

But they had plotted to murder others together, which was the closest thing he had to friends back in the day.
