“I know.”

“I hate this shit.”

“So do I.”

As they made their way through the crowd, Caro became more determined than ever to ensure a future for this world. If the demons had some of these people, they needed to be set free, and the rest of this beautiful, crazy, magnificent world had to be saved.

The demons had planned a fate worse than death for these people, and she wouldn’t allow it to befall them. She also wasn’t about to let penguins be wiped off the Earth. Those cute, waddling little animals deserved better, as dideveryother animal on this planet.

“Hey, you’ve got a sword!” a young, drunken man declared while he staggered toward her. “Are you like Wonder Woman or something?”

When Saber clasped her wrist and pulled her away from the kid’s drunken lurch, Caro rolled her eyes; she was out here hunting demons, and he was trying to protect her from a twenty-something kid.

“Oh cool, you have a sword too,” the kid slurred as he eyed Saber’s sword.

Saber stared unrelentingly at him, but the kid was too drunk to notice as he stretched a hand toward the sword on Saber’s back. When Saber snarled at him, the kid’s precarious position finally registered.

“Back off,” Saber warned.

The kid’s hand dropped, and he stumbled back. “Sorry, man.”

A young woman rushed over and seized his wrist. She eyed him and Caro as she tugged the young man away. “Come on, Duane. Let’s get you some water.”

“They have swords. They’re like superheroes or something,” Duane said.

Fear flashed over the woman’s face when she glanced back at them, and she hurried her friend a little faster. “They could be killers, you idiot.”

“Oh shit,” Duane slurred. “They could be. That’s pretty cool!”

“I think Duane needs more than water,” Caro muttered.

“I agree, but killing him on the street would be frowned upon, and, unfortunately, I’ve vowed not to kill any more humans.”

Saber sounded entirely too disappointed about this. Caro poked him in the ribs. “That’s a good thing.”

He grunted in response.

“Also,” Caro stepped out from behind him, “you don’t have to protect me from humans.”

Saber rested a hand possessively on her hip. “I don’t care if they’re humans, Savages, or vampires; no man will get too close to you.”

“Okay, Captain Neanderthal, but I can take care of myself, especially from a human. So don’t do that again.”

When he growled, she rolled her eyes but decided against pushing the issue further. She was very aware of how possessive mated males were, and if she was honest with herself, if some drunken female approached him, she’d be tempted to kick that woman’s ass, even if she wasn’t hitting on him.

“Come on,” she said. “We should keep moving.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-FIVE

They didn’t tryto enter any of the establishments; there was no way they were getting their swords inside. They could change the minds of the bouncers or hostesses they encountered, but there were too many other patrons for them to do anything about.

So instead, they moved through the shadows on the main thoroughfare. After a while, they headed for the side roads and alleys again. They walked along them before returning to the busier area once more.

When they got there, she spotted Willow and Declan ahead of them. They were stopped outside a darkened store, leaning against the wall while Willow examined her phone.

“Let’s go this way,” Saber said.

Clasping her elbow, he turned and led her in a different direction. They only strolled a few feet before the stench of rot filled her nostrils.
