“But they’re after the sword,” Saber said. “And as far as they know, onlyoneof those stones has been found, and Willow has it. They know she’s in the Northeast and won’t go far from it.”
“So wouldn’t they be in Boston or the surrounding area?” Willow asked. “That’s where they found us last time.”
“They could be,” Saber said, “but I have a feeling they somehow knew the sword was in Maine and decided to establish their central location around here while they looked for it. They wouldn’t pick it up and move it, even after they lost the sword.
“They’re not so far from where the compound was, or where they think we could be, that it’s difficult for them to travel there. Besides, I killed that demon in the storm drain; they’ll expect it to be the work of an Alliance member, as almost no other vampire, without the training, could have pulled it off.
“They’ll start grouping together around here in the hopes that maybe we’ve moved, and they can find us again. They’ll also do it to protect themselves. But I suspect they’re centered here and have tunneled out to other locations from those drains.”
“But hunters in Arizona were also injected with their blood,” Saxon said.
“It’s easier to transport their blood than them,” Saber said. “They could have also traveled there at night or in some container that kept them out of the sun’s rays. It’s not difficult for them to do, but I’m not sure they’d venture that far from their main base.”
“Did they when you were a Savage?” Ronan asked.
“I don’t know. That’s not something they would let me in on. Plus, there were fewer of them when I was a Savage.”
“Or so you think,” Caro said. “They might not have let you know how many of them there were.”
“Or they could have been spread out to all different locations,” Elyse said.
“They could have,” Saber agreed, “and it is possible we’ll have to track them worldwide, but I believe their main focus is in this area. There’s too much activity here; if there wasn’t a reason for them to stay here, they would have left after Willow claimed the sword.”
Willow’s hand rested on the hilt of her sword as it lay before her on the table. A small spark ran through the red-orange stone.
“Going into those tunnels after them could prove to be a death sentence,” Nathan said. “Who knows how many tunnels they have down there.”
“That’sifthey’re camped out down there,” Killean said. “We can’t go down there for nothing.”
“We’ll have to draw them out,” Saber said.
“How do we do that?” Vicky asked.
“By using me,” Saber said.
Caro stiffened beside him, and her head turned his way. He could feel her staring daggers into him but didn’t look at her.
“They want me,” he continued. “As far as I know, I’m the only one who got away from them and forsook their ways. They don’t like that. If they know where I am, they’ll send Savages for me, but they’ll come too. They won’t be able to resist.”
“No,” Caro said.
“And how would you lure them out?” Logan inquired.
No,” Caro said again, and Brie was shaking her head.
Saber moved his hand from the small of Caro’s back to her hip as he pulled her closer. It didn’t matter what she or Brie thought about this;hewas the best way to draw the demons and Savages out, and they had to use him.
“I believe they’re in those drainage tunnels. I’ll go in there alone, take some explosives with me, and use them to piss them off and draw them out. Once they realizeIdid it, they’ll turn the Savages loose on me, but they’ll also come for me. I know they will.”
“And how will they know it was you?” Killean asked.
“I’ll make sure someone sees me and lives to track me.”
“You can’t do that alone,” Caro said.
“I agree,” Brie said.
“I’ll go with him,” Saxon offered.
