“What’s done is done.” Lord Ruin’s minty breath ghosted down my nape as his fingers curled into my arms to keep me from running.

Fane whipped around, his pupils in long black slits, crimson flashing in his irises. “Let her go.”

“You know I can’t.” Ruin tilted his head while he kept a firm grip on me as I struggled, his fingers bruising my flesh. “Why would you want to protect your brother’s killer?”

“He doesn’t,” I snapped. “That’s why he handed me over to you.”

A silky laugh tumbled out of the high demon lord’s supple lips. “I think he very much wants to have you back. Why is that, Fane?” Ruin’s head dipped, and he ran his nose along my temple, ice crystallizing every place he touched. “You want nothing to do with the Infernal Sol, and I don’t believe it’s simply because you bit her. What’s so special about Tatum Teague that you would risk this deal?”

Fane’s nostril’s flared while tremors rippled through his muscles as he fought to keep his beast at bay. “There’s nothing special at all.”

Invisible daggers penetrated my chest, twisting into their wounds to keep them from healing. The bastard had made me more vulnerable last night with his kindness, and now he trampled all over my defenses. I bit my tongue to stop the unshed tears from falling.

“I’ll find out soon enough.” So many underlying meanings swirled beneath Ruin’s words, and my legs shook as he forced me forward. “Perry, make sure Fane gets home.”

Perry and two unfamiliar demons slinked from the shadows, reluctantly surrounding Fane. As Ruin led me through the cemetery, a few more minions filed out to flank their lord. I glanced over my shoulder at the demon shifter, his expression a mask of fury and rage so intense it made my breath catch.

“I’m sorry,”he said through our mental link.

My teeth bared, and I felt that dark monster clawing through my insides as I responded into his mind with enough venom to kill a dozen men.“Go to hell, Maverick.”

He’d handed me over to the high demon lord of Savannah and betrayed the small amount of trust I’d given him. Fane and I had only been forced together for a few weeks, and in that time, I’d let him in farther than anyone else, even Hawk. And the demon shifter threw it back in my face.

I had no idea what Ruin planned to do with me or how he’d extract the Infernal Sol. But I wouldn’t stick around long enough to find out. I’d escape my captivity the first chance I got.

And then I’d go after Fane Maverick. I’d become the savage monster he turned me into the moment he cursed me with his bite.
