“See,” Maeve says softly. “I know what I’m doing.” My sister gives me a hug. “Get her home safe for me.” I don’t even mind that she tricked me into coming. Little does she know I would have gladly volunteered to drive Sarah home.
I say goodbye to my brother and Val, then stride over to where Sarah waits for me in front of the house. She leans back against the wall, her lips curving into a wide smile as I stalk forward. I love that she’s happy to see me. It puts to rest the worries that have been running through my head most of the day.
“Hey, beautiful.” I grin, crowding her body with mine. I rest a hand against the wall over her shoulder and lean in.
She walks her fingers up my chest. “Hey, yourself, Mr. Gives a Girl an Orgasm and Doesn’t Call the Next Day.”
“Oh, wow.” I chuckle. “You have had some drinks.”
“I need to tell you a secret,” she whispers, glancing around. But there’s only the two of us on this doorstep.
“What’s that?” I lean closer. My lips ache with the urge to kiss her.
“Your sister is playing matchmaker. She got me drunk on purpose so you’d have to drive me home.”
“I don’t think that’s a secret.” I probably should have a talk with Maeve about meddling in my life. Though, she kinda did me a solid.
Sarah’s gaze drops to my mouth. “Oh.”
“Yeah,” I say in a lustful haze. Memories of last night flash in my mind. Would it be wrong to ravage Sarah on some stranger’s doorstep?
The front door swings open.
I jerk back.
Sarah’s eyes widen.
“Oh!” Two women stand in the doorway, coats on and purses in hand. “Sorry.” They glance from me to Sarah.
“No.” Sarah’s cheeks flush. “I’m sorry.”
“Everyone’s sorry.” One of the women laughs, an obvious attempt to break the tension of an awkward moment.
“Come on.” I step back and take Sarah’s hand. “Let’s get you home.”
“Thanks.” She leans into my side. We walk out to the road where my truck is parked. I unlock the passenger door and hold it open for Sarah.
“It was nice meeting you, Sarah!” One of the women calls from a nearby vehicle.
“Yes!” The other one says. “Y’all get home safe.”
“You too.” I lift my hand in a wave.
Sarah climbs in my truck and I walk around the front before joining her in the cab. I start the engine and mess with the temperature settings while waiting for the fog in the windows to clear. “Is that okay? Too hot? Too cold?”
Sarah flashes me a grin. “You’re too hot.” She’s adorable, but I can’t drop her home in this condition. At least, that’s how I justify my suggestion.
“How about we sober you up before getting you home?” I pull onto the road and head toward the ranch.
“Good idea. I don’t want to set a bad example.” She lets out a long sigh. “Do you think I’m a bad mother?”
“No.” That’s impossible. Sarah loves her kids more than anyone.
“Sometimes I think it was a mistake coming back here.” Her eyes are glassy as they meet mine.
“Hey.” I take my hand off the shifter and squeeze her leg. “Don’t say that.”
“They hate it here.” She doesn’t need to say who. From what she’s shared, her boys aren’t exactly discreet in their feelings about living in Wilder Valley.
