I follow her into the kitchen, where everyone is standing around snacking and drinking.

“There he is!” Jackson tips his beer. “We were starting to worry you wouldn’t come.”

“No way.” I shake my head. I’ve missed enough parties. “I invited someone who might be joining us. Three someones, actually. I hope that’s okay.”

“Is it Sarah?” Maeve’s smile is smug.

I roll my eyes, but can’t hold my grin back. “Maybe.”

“I knew it!” She claps her hands. “You two are totally getting back together!”

“Stay out of your brother’s business.” Alex levels her with a glare.

“Never.” She winks at me. “He loves it when I meddle.”

“I do?”

“Of course. You’ll want me on your side when you eventually fuck things up.”

Laughter rattles my chest. “Now I’m fucking things up?”

“Maybe not yet, but you will.”

“Wow. Okay, good to know you have so much faith in me.”

“It’s not personal. All of my brothers fuck up eventually.”

“Hey! I heard that,” Ryan calls from the living room.

“And who got your sorry ass back together with Val?” Maeve returns.

“You do not get to take credit for that.” Ryan walks over and loops an arm around Val’s waist.

Maeve narrows her stare. “No?”

“No. Nothing could’ve kept us apart. Just because you forced us to talk to each other doesn’t give you bragging rights. Or the license to meddle in Aiden’s non-existent love life.”

“Hey!” I glare at my brother.

“Whatever.” Maeve scoops up Collin, who’s fussing at her feet. “Believe what you want. I’m never going to stop.”

“Alex, rein in your woman,” Ryan teases.

“If you think I have any say over what she does, then you are delusional,” Alex says, following after Lulu as she weaves in and around people and furniture.

“Maeve can’t involve herself in relationships that don’t exist.” Jackson grins. “That’s why I stay single and unattached.”

Maeve gives him the side eye. “Oh, I thought it was because you are a whore.”

“Maeve!” Her husband glares at her. “There are children around.”

“I’m sorry.” She levels Jackson with a stare. “I meant to say manwhore.”

Everyone bursts out laughing. Well, except Alex, who appears quite pissed.

“I can’t.” He shakes his head. “You watch Lulu. I need a beer.” He storms out of the room.

“Oh, come on, Alex,” Maeve calls after him.
