“Do you have a set schedule or is there a list for that?” I ask dryly.

“You judge, but I’m the one getting laid tonight.”

“Yeah.” I can’t help but sigh. I got laid last night, but I’m not about to tell my little brother that. He’d want all the details, which I’m not sharing. I haven’t stopped thinking about Sarah and last night. We were good together. So good I want to do it again. But that’s not all I want.

I want her to know my intentions go beyond a night of amazing sex.

I want to make us official.

I want a second chance.

I would have stopped by the diner to see her earlier, but she wasn’t working. I thought about texting her all day, but got stuck on what to say. What I need to say isn’t a conversation I want to have over the phone. It needs to be in person.

I wonder what she’s doing now. Is she thinking about me? Does she regret last night? If it weren’t so late, I’d be tempted to stop by her parents’.Stalker much? It’s probably better I volunteered to watch Maeve’s kiddos with Jackson.

My phone vibrates with an incoming call. For a second, I imagine it’s Sarah. That hope is quashed when my sister’s name pops up on the caller ID.

“Hey, Maeve.”

“Hey, best brother.” Her words are followed by a giggle. She’s drunk.

“Hey.” I grin. “What’s up?”

“So, um, I was wondering if you could come pick me up?”

My brow furrows. Ryan was supposed to get her and Val after their girls’ night. “Where’s Ryan? Is everything okay?”

“It’s fine. Everything’s fine.” Her voice drops to a whisper. “But Val is horny. She wants Ryan to take her to their special hookup spot. I don’t want to be in the car when they’re eye fucking each other. Please pick me up so I don’t have to.”

I bite back a chuckle. “Fine. Where are you?”

“Already texted you the address. ’Kay, thanks. Bye!”

She ends the call before I can say another word.

“What was that about?” Jackson says from his side of the couch.

“I don’t really know.” Nor do I want to repeat it. I shake my head and laugh. “I need to go pick up Maeve.”

“Oh, man.” Jackson smiles, looking up from his phone screen. “Prepare yourself to hear a whole lotta shit you never wanted to know. Drunk Maeve is a good time.”

* * *

It’s onlya fifteen-minute drive from Maeve’s to the address she texted. Though in all fairness, I don’t think there’re many places more than fifteen minutes from the center of Wilder Valley.

I park along the road behind Ryan’s truck and make my way to the house, but before I do, the front door opens. Ryan, Val, and Maeve step outside.

“Hey.” I lift my hand and wave, walking closer.

“Oh!” Maeve glances at the open door of the house, then back to me as she hustles over. “Um, I don’t need a ride home after all, but since you’re here maybe you can take my friend?”

“Maeve.” Ryan stares at our sister. “What are you pulling?”

“Nothing I haven’t done before.” She smiles brightly, then turns back to the door.

Sarah stands in the door frame.

I freeze. She’s so fucking beautiful. A ghost of a smile plays on her face and my chest tightens.
