“Right,” I answered. “Nothing is on that side of my face.”
“Okay,” Steph said, holding the device to my good cheek. “Hold still for one sec.”
I clenched my jaw, slightly embarrassed, as the device beeped a few times. “You’re all set,” she finally said, handing Amanda a printout.
“Thanks so much, Steph,” Amanda responded for me. “I’ll see you at the engagement party on Saturday?”
“Of course!” She beamed. “I’m so excited! And this is between us, I promise.”
“Thanks,” I answered, waving at her as we left the hallway. “I was never here.”
Amanda laughed and led me to a display of makeup. I had never seen so many shades of nude and brown in my life. It made total sense that I had no idea how to get the right color.
“So,” she whispered, making sure only I could hear her, “I need to know if you have dry or oily skin.”
I looked at her, totally lost.
“Jesus,” she sighed, defeated. “What does your skin feel like in the afternoon after not washing it for hours?”
“Normal, I guess? I’ve never had issues, so I’m assuming…”
“That you probably have perfect skin,” she joked. “So, we’ll go with this one.”
I watched her stand on her toes to reach the right color even though she was almost as tall as me. I tried not to smile, realizing how easy she was making the whole trip on me.
“What do you use to apply it?” she asked.
“My finger?”
Amanda facepalmed and shook her head.
“Everything makes sense now.”
She weaved through the displays, stopping at one by the register and grabbing a little orange sponge that was shaped like an egg. I then followed her again to another display labeledPrimers. I had totally been doing the makeup thing wrong the whole time.
Amanda noticed my confusion and chuckled.
“You weren’t using primer either, were you?”
I shook my head.
“You’re adorable, Noah.” The way she said it was less of a compliment and more condescending, but not mean-spirited.
I tried not to smile as she grabbed a tube of clear gel and made her way to the register.
“I’ll pay, and you can pay me back,” she said as we waited in line. “Or you can just pretend you’re buying it for me.”
I rolled my eyes and handed her my credit card.
“That works too.”

“SO, HOW LONG ISthirty-eight dollars’ worth of product going to last me?” Noah asked, slightly annoyed.
We climbed into his truck, and I put the Sephora bag in the backseat, having carried it the whole way through the mall for him.
