“He hasn’t said anything to me, I swear. He wouldn’t be allowed to talk about the case to me or anyone other than Felix or those involved.” She sighed and nodded. “Maybe he called wanting me, but Cash told him I can’t keep secrets to save my life so planned it with him instead.” Austin cut in.
“This is true. She gets way too excited and ends up blurting it out.”
“Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind the next time I decide to tell her a secret.” Austin just laughed as Belle walked away to her section of the store. He left shortly after to go next door. His shop was built, so they were just finalizing the booths and what colors he wanted the walls. Going to the front door, I unlocked it and flipped the “closed” sign to “open” before going into my office. We had a delivery coming in so I wanted to print off my orders so I could check it off. I left the books to Belle to check and put away as that was now her baby. About lunchtime, I rang Ma to tell her Belle’s dad was in town and she told me to bring him. I couldn’t help but laugh. There was no need to ask with her, she would just tell you to do it before you got the chance. After hanging up with her, Belle came into my office with a worried look on her face.
“What’s wrong?”
“Cash is here.”
“Okay and you are wearing a worried expression because?”
“He isn’t alone.” Pushing back from my desk, I moved around the boxes on my floor and walked out to the shop. Seeing Cash there with one of the guys from work as well as Belle’s dad.
“Cash, what’s going on?” He looked over at me and I could tell by his expression that it wasn’t good.
Chapter Fifteen
Cash
After waking up to Vannah throwing up in the middle of the night, I was worried about her when I left for work. She assured me she felt fine, but she was the type to play it down. I had to try not to hound her though. If she didn’t feel well, I hoped she would stay home. We were just gonna have to see how we go.
When I turned up to the station, I saw Felix waiting for me with a coffee. Raising a brow as I took it from him. “Good morning.”
“Morning, how’d it go last night?” I shrugged and took a drink from my coffee.
“Dropped him off, I think she brought that he was just surprising her. If not, I am sure I will hear about it from Vannah later. Everything okay?” I went into my office and sat down. “Any updates on the asshole?”
“No, he is still in the same place. I’m taking it as a good sign for now. The eyes on him will tell me if he moves.” After talking for a bit longer, Felix went into his office and I kept working to tie up loose ends. We knew who had done it and had a feeling it had to do with Belle, but how Holly knew Dale was what we needed to look into. It wasn’t like everyone knew who Belle actually was.
About lunchtime, my desk phone rang. “James speaking.”
“Detective, there is someone here to see you.”
“Be right out.” I hung up and pushed back from my desk, moving around to the door. Opening it up, I made my way to the front desk. Seeing Neil standing there, I opened the door beside the front desk and let him past. “Let’s go to Felix’s office. Same one we went to yesterday.” He gave me a nod and went toward it, stopping at the door. Knocking when I got to it, I waited for Felix to answer before I opened it. Stepping in, I let Neil pass me and closed it behind us. He raised a brow at us.
“Everything okay?”
“I need to tell Belle what’s going on.”
“Why, what’s happened?”
“Nothing, she just doesn’t believe that I am here for a surprise visit.”
“Okay but she is with Vannah today and I never said anything to V last night, so will she be able to talk with her around.”
“I don’t know… I have never done anything like this before, so she is going to be skeptical about it all.”
“It’s only been a day, let’s just give her a little more time and if she is still asking questions, then we can come clean.” I looked over to Felix to hopefully get him to back me up, but I could see him watching Neil. “Or should we tell her?” He was quiet for a minute before speaking.
“If we tell her, she is going to be looking over her shoulder the whole time and stressing herself out. If we don’t, she is going to be on her guard, waiting for you to drop a bombshell on her. Either way, she isn’t going to be relaxed. As much as I don’t like it, maybe we should tell her so that her guard is up. If he gets through somehow, and she sees him, she won’t question whether or not it’s her imagination.”
“What is the point in stressing her out before we have to though? We have eyes on him. If he moves, we tell her.”
“Hasn’t there been eyes on him before and he slipped through unnoticed?”
“Was it really unnoticed though or did they just not report it because Belle wasn’t near?”
“What do you mean?” Neil looked at me, raising his brow. “You think my guys knew that he was in town?”
