Raegan is the daughter of the school's vice-principal. She is somewhat protected but still a scholarship kid nonetheless and, by default, a target for the kings and their maggots.
"I think Theo and Finn might be catching on." I shrug.
"Naw, not yet. I think they're just suspicious. Maybe you should play a little nicer, get their hopes up. They're not used to not being the "Hot Stuff" and not automatically worshiped and adored on campus." She rolls her eyes.
"Maybe." I shrug again. "Guess it's worth a try. Wouldn't want it all to come out too soon; not enough blood in the water yet." I smirk. Oh yes, there will be blood; make no mistake about that. The mere thought of the vengeance I mean to dole out has me filled with childish giddiness.
"Let's start heading back. I think the bells are about to ring. You're in this class with me, right?" I look over at her.
"Yup, and so are all the kings. This should be interesting. Why don't you try for seductress in this one? I need a good laugh." We turn and start heading toward the patio doors leading us back into the school area.
As we are walking back inside, I spot Spencer eating by himself off to the side of the courtyard and head in his direction. He looks so sad and alone. Raegan tries to pull me in the other direction, but I nod toward Spencer, she smiles back at me. “He usually eats alone, I’m not too sure if he has any friends. The kings bully him a bit and others take it as an opportunity to be mean to him. He’s a really nice kid, just a little different and awkward.”
My heart clenches in my chest. I know what that feels like—to feel all alone. To feel different from my peers and singled out because of it. I walk over to him and call out so as not to startle him. “Hey Spencer!”
He looks up in my direction, still holding the apple he was eating. He smiles in my direction, but I can see he’s unsure and wary of us. I walk closer and sit down on the bench next to him. “Beautiful day isn’t it, Spencer?”
He looks from Raegan to me and back again, a blush rising on his neck. “Hey Mia, Raegan.” He nods. “Yeah, not too many more warm days left.” The apple still sits in his hand awkwardly.
“I love being outside as much as possible, the warm sunshine, the fresh breeze. I’m always sad when it gets colder, ya know.” Raegan sits on the other side of Spencer, stretching out her legs and turning her beautiful face up to the sunshine.
“In Manhattan it gets cold so fast. We don’t have the long falls like you do here. It’s beautiful there too, just in a different way.” I raise my face up to the sunshine and relax.
“Are you glad you moved here Mia?” Spencer asks quietly.
“Honestly? I miss my sister, grandmother, and my friends back home, but I’m glad to be here with Raegan and making new friends like you, Spencer.”
“I’m glad you're liking it here and I…I would like to be your friend.” He smiles shyly at me, a charming blush cresting across his cheekbones.
“Settled then, we’re friends, you, Raegan, and me. Hopefully we can enjoy a few more days of sunshine before the cold comes. I have to head to my locker, but I’ll see you later Spencer.”
“See ya Spencer.” Raegan smiles back at him as we walk away and head back indoors.
I turn to wave to him as we are entering the school, and he waves back with a smile across his face. For just a moment, I forget why I came here. I truly enjoyed talking to Spencer and sitting for a moment out in the sunshine. I have a feeling that he hides an amazing personality because of those fuckers—the kings—and others that bully him.
Maybe I can change that. There is no reason why I can’t change the narrative for people like Spencer while destroying the kings of Casbury.
After getting our books from our lockers, we walk arm and arm into the last class of the day, Political Science. We grab one of the double desks a few rows from the front and sit. I wave at Elizabeth on the other side of the room. As I pull out my Mac to take notes, I see the kings walk into the classroom. Everyone’s eyes turn to watch them, I hear girls sigh around me, and it makes me want to laugh. They really do think they are all that don’t they? Such arrogance. Let’s see what happens when I start taking away all their power.
Mateo is the first to notice us and motions to the other kings. They pair off and take a double desk on either side of us. Making the set of girls that were already sitting there scurry away to find new seats. Mateo and Carter are to our left, and Finn and Theo are on our right.
"Ladies." Carter nods and winks to us as he sits down.
“Walking rabies,” Raegan answers him with an evil smile.
I try to hold in my laugh at her comment, but it’s getting harder and harder with her smart mouth.
I feel Raegan grip my thigh discretely from under the table. "Play nice now, Mia. I'd rather watch them crawl," she grits from the side of her mouth, her lip tilted up.
I look over at Mateo, knowing he's the easiest target. Boy does nothing but flirt all day long and has an ego as large as the state of North Carolina.
I give him my full attention and the sexiest smile, guaranteed to render boys stupid in New York. "Hey, Mateo, I didn't know you were in this class, too." He watches my mouth and sits up, shifting his chair slightly closer to me.
"My lucky day, I guess." He smirks, running his hand through all that gorgeous, lush hair.
"Must be mine too." I wink and slowly bite my lip.
Just then, the teacher walks through the classroom door and takes a look around. When he notices all four kings in his classroom, he shakes his head and mumbles something about being an unlucky bastard.
