They didn’t even need to be closed.

She invaded every thought. Took over every action. He was equal parts savoring every second of it and cursing himself for taking even that little bit of pleasure. Nothing could change their situation, no matter how much he wished it… and hedidwish it.

More than he’d ever wished for anything ever before.

But he meant what he’d said to Julius. Rose deserved to be loved with a whole heart. An entire soul. And he’d never be able to give that to her.

Bax and Olive headed his way, both with three puppies tucked into their arms, Bella walking briskly at their side. If looks could curse, Olive Maxwell would’ve drilled him with a second hex as she walked by, but Bax slowed to a stop.

“You okay, man?” The Guardian Angel followed his gaze to where it was latched onto Rose by the lower barn, now talking to Harper and a chuckling Miguel. “Ah. Never mind. I get it.”

“You do?” Damian pulled his attention away, barely.

“The Maxwell sisters are a whole new level of stubborn. When they get something stuck in their head, it’s practically impossible for it to be removed. Not even with celestial intervention or Magic. If the first worked, I would’ve used it to get Olive to see reason about this roomie thing. And if the latter worked, I would’ve found the most powerful witch or warlock around and begged them to do their hocus-pocus. Hell, I would’ve done anything in my power to make it happen.”

“Wouldn’t the most powerful witch around be Edie Maxwell?” Damian asked, brow lifted.

“We were talking hypotheticals here, man. Not real-world scenarios.”

He would’ve done anything to make it happen.Celestial intervention. Badass witchery.

Anything.

The Guardian Angel quickly hustled to catch up with Olive, but when Rose’s gaze flickered his way, Damian couldn’t take his eyes off her. A myriad of emotions moved over her face, and he knew his face reflected the same.

He couldn’t pin down any one…

Because he suddenly felteverything, and everything felt like his heart was about to explode.

“In Your Eyes”

Damian sat on his motorcycle and debated his next move to the background sounds of children running up and down the quaint suburban street. He’d left the city behind about an hour ago and now stared at the cozy little two-story house with black shutters. A red SUV sat in the drive, a signal someone was home.

He just needed to be adult enough to knock on the door and be ready to do exactly what Bax had suggested the day of the adoption fair.

Anything.

He’d say his piece, plead his case, and then walk away as if the person he was talking to didn’t have the ability to take away one of the best things in his life before he had a chance to truly enjoy it.

Rose.

Afuturewith Rose, and all the endless possibilities that came with it. The laughs. The tears. The joys. Celebrations and sadness. Hell, he’d even relish the fights because it would mean watching her eyes glow dewy gold and wielding her power like a badass witchy goddess. And it was impossible not to think about the makeup sex.

Damian wanted itall.

He wantedRose, and the first step in achieving that was knocking on the fucking door of his past.

A shooting fireball of pain ripped through his chest as he climbed off his motorcycle and damn near fell on his face. From the moment he’d decided to come, his heartburn from hell had grown tenfold, sometimes distracting him from anything and everything around him.

It slowly ebbed as he took one step toward the quaint wraparound porch. It flared again, making him stumble. Sweat plastered his hair to his forehead and cement filled his limbs by the time he reached the red front door.

He prayed like hell he had the right address. He couldn’t picture the girl he remembered, who wore aged leather pants and vintage garage band T-shirts, living in a place that looked straight out of the pages ofCountry Homemagazine.

“Here goes nothing.” He groaned, lifting his shaking hand to the brass knocker.

The door opened before his arm dropped to his side, and Callie stood on the threshold, her eyes blinking as if checking whether he was a mirage. The only thing more surprising than him being there was the fact she didn’t slam the door in his face.
