He looked at the side table, but they never gave him a phone. Grabbing the little string to call the nurse, he went to pull it but froze. They probably had orders to force him to rest and would try to put him back to sleep, but rest was not what he needed. He needed to find Maeve.
He couldn’t stop the frantic pounding of his heart or the panic that wanted to take over. The last time he’d felt like this was when his sister died. He took a deep breath and tried to stop the shaking in his hands. How long had he been unconscious? Did they know where the guys working for the Righteous had taken her? Was she alive? Is that what Trev was trying hard not to say?
Trev’s eyes had been filled with worry. Fuck, no. He wasn’t losing her.
He silently screamed as he moved his legs off the side of the bed, then had to hold his head in his hands. All the images of their time together flooded his mind like a dam broke.
Balling his fist, he fought through the pain lancing his side and piercing his mind. He needed to get to Morry, and then he needed to get his hands on one of the Hummers and a gun. Glancing across the room, Wolf spotted cupboards that were all labeled.
Slowly slipping his feet to the floor, he swore under his breath as his knee screamed at him. “Fuck, okay. You can do this.”
Wolf slid down to the floor so he was on his ass, and using his good leg and arm, he pushed himself backward until he reached the supply area. Duke followed him and kept poking at his face as if telling him he needed to go back to bed or hurry up. Reaching up, Wolf grabbed the edge of the long counter and slowly pulled himself to his feet. Sweat was beading on his brow by the time he was fully upright, and he had to lean against the counter as every part of his body screamed that he was being a fucking idiot.
“No, you need to get answers,” he mumbled as encouragement. He’d been through worse pain and harder situations than a car crash.
Looking at the little white labels neatly stuck to the wood, he spotted one that said bandages and wraps. Shuffling along until he could get the cupboard open, he found what he needed. Pulling out two tensor bandages, Wolf pulled the hospital gown out of the way and quickly wrapped his knee with one roll and then the other. Placing his toes down, he tested it. His knee still had a lot of pain, but it was less.
“Now I need a cane or…perfect,” he said and slowly walked to the far corner to grab the shiny metal thing that held bags of blood or whatever was supposed to be dripped into the body. His hand gripped the cool metal, and with the metal walking thing on one side and Duke on the other, he made his grand escape.
All was going too well, and he should have known better. To get out, you needed a card pass.
“Son of a bitch,” he muttered as he rattled the locked door. He was trapped, and the fear he’d beaten back slowly started to take over. “Stop it. You’re going to pass out,” he said, then stumbled sideways as little black dots floated in front of his eyes.
“No, you can’t. You can’t pass out,” Wolf growled at himself but had to lean against the door as all his muscles went heavy.
The black dots were spreading, and he licked his lips as he lowered himself to the ground. If whoever wanted Maeve hurt her, he was going to kill every last one of them. None of them would be safe until he wiped them from the planet. The fear was quickly swirling into anger that was burning white hot. Duke laid down beside him, and as their eyes met, Duke whined.
“I’m sorry, buddy. I just need a few moments to rest.”

Morry sat up straight, sweat trickling down her back. Her eyes darted around the room as she tried to determine what had woken her up. Memories, so many memories, were racing through her mind, and then the smile on her son’s face when she walked into his room last night. So why was she so anxious? Morry glanced down at Jeremy, sleeping soundly, his arm over his eyes. She took a moment to appreciate the view and still couldn’t believe everything that had happened to lead to this moment.
Just as she decided to crawl under the blankets and wake him up, her phone vibrated on her nightstand. Reaching over, she grabbed the glowing device and hit talk.
“Henry, what is it? What’s wrong?” Jeremy immediately sat up beside her. She rubbed her face. Of course, Wolf would try to leave. She should’ve put fucking guards on his door. The crazy ass. “I’ll be right there.”
“Wolf,” Jeremy asked, and she nodded.
Swinging her legs out of bed, she grabbed her camo fatigues. “Yeah, the crazy ass decided to leave his room and collapsed at the locked door.”
“Wow, you weren’t kidding,” Jeremy said and got up. She glimpsed his hard ass before he covered it with jeans. Okay, he was turning her into a sex addict. She couldn’t get enough of him.
Pulling on a hoodie, the dog tags around her neck rattled as she pulled them from inside the material. “You don’t have to come,” she said as Jeremy pulled on his own sweatshirt.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t be able to sleep without you,” he said casually, but the words stopped her in her tracks. “What? Why are you staring at me like that?”
Jeremy walked over, and she rose on her toes to kiss him. There was no hesitation, and his hands gripped her ass, pulling her tight against his body.
“It scares me how much I love you,” she said softly against his lips.
Jeremy nipped her bottom lip playfully. “I’m not going anywhere. Every inch of you is mine, and I’m not letting go.”
“I guess we should go make sure Wolf hasn’t done himself any permanent damage or killed Henry yet,” she said.
“When we get back here, I’m taking you all over again,” he said as if reading her mind.
“Such hardships.”
