She would have to tell Judd to order the guys to ride. They needed to keep the group from breaching the compound. There were too many places to hide and a ton more weapons for them to get their hands on. It seemed a little too convenient that they decided to attack just when a new shipment of guns had arrived. They had a fucking rat. It was the only explanation that made sense.
Morry opened her mouth to order the call when the built-in C.B. inside the Hummer crackled. “Yee-ha. Motherfuckers.”
She smirked and then started to laugh as Arek’s annoying as fuck voice blared through the vehicle. Sure enough, two little blue dots appeared on the screen a moment later.
“Hogging all the fucking fun again, I see. When are you gonna learn to share, Morry?”
“What are you bitching about? I left you some.”
“Ignore Arek. Where would you like us?”
She hadn’t realized how much she needed to hear Trev’s calm voice and took a deep breath. She stopped the Hummer and placed her head on the steering wheel.
“You decide. I’ve got about seven men hiding by the east rock wall. The rest are for the taking.”
“Good to hear your voice again,” Kes said, her eyes filled with tears.
There was something about them being here when she needed them the most that made her emotional. It was like they’d known that of all days, today was the day she couldn’t take one more thing going wrong.
“Hey, Kes. God, it’s good to hear your voices.”
“Fuck, is she gonna cry? Did I finally make Morry cry? Fuckin’ yes,” Arek yelled and followed it up with a whoop just as the two Hummers burst over the giant sand hill at the same time.
“I would never cry for you, jackass,” she said.
“Ouch, that hurts my pride, Morry. Seriously, you wound me.”
“I doubt that, Arek.”
She hit the mute button as Jeremy reached out and grabbed her hand. She smiled, gripping his hand tight. “That’s my boys.”
“Like the other guys, I’m not supposed to know about?”
She nodded and locked eyes with his beautiful blue ones. They captivated her. She stared into those blue depths, despite the world burning down around her, and she never wanted to look away. He cupped her cheek, and she leaned into the warmth of his thumb running over her cheek.
“Kiss me,” she ordered, but her tone was teasing.
“Whatever the boss wants, the boss gets,” he said.
She met him halfway.
Jeremy had been tapping at the steel door she’d placed around her heart and soul for safekeeping. She had leaned against it to keep him out, but she was weary of the fight.
“Awe, she’s making out in the Hummer. Why won’t you make out with me?”
Morry unmuted the CB, glaring at the other Hummer.
“If you even try to kiss me, I’ll cut out your tongue. I’m pretty sure Renee would consider it an upgrade. I know I will.”
“Jerk.”
She laughed and turned back to Jeremy. “Before you ask. Yes, Arek is always like that. So just prepare yourself.”
“Come on, Morry. I wanna race you to the compound,” Arek said as he drove circles around her, creating a massive dust storm.
“He does realize he just killed a bunch of people?” Jeremy watched Arek hang out the window like they were kids at bumper cars.
“Oh yes, he knows, and sadly, he used to be worse. Here is the thing about Arek he will always have your six and would step in the line of fire any time. When that is all you can count on, it becomes all that matters.”
