Morry held up her hands to try to stop him, but he just kept on talking. “I still love you, Morry, and I want us to get back together. I’m hoping you’ll give us another try.”

“Have you lost your-ever-lovin’ mind?” She shot to her feet and moved back around the desk to put it between her and her obviously delusional ex.

His brows pulled low as he scowled at her. “I’m trying to tell you how I feel, how I’ve always felt, and here you are being sarcastic.”

“No, I’m not being sarcastic. I’m being serious. Andrew, do you have any idea what it was like to be sitting there, have my computer ring, and see you and Lindsay together? Do you even understand that image is forever burned into my brain? Her naked ass pressed up against my laptop screen as you fucked her?”

He looked down at the ground and opened his mouth, but she didn’t give him a chance.

“No, I’m not done. I lived over there with one female officer to approximately a hundred men. At the drop of a hat, I could’ve fucked any of them, and you would never have been the wiser, but I didn’t. I never even thought about it. My family was here. You were here, Kyle was here, and the point is that I…I was lonely too, but I didn’t fall into anyone’s arms. That is all on you.”

She leaned forward and gripped the edge of the desk. “I filed for divorce because I didn’t want to make things work. Do you understand that after my heart was ripped out, I had to stare my unit in the face and hold my head up high like I hadn’t just been humiliated in front of them in the most graphic way possible? I respected myself too much to return to the same river, Andrew.”

“I’m sorry. It’s all I have. I can’t go back and change what happened. All I can do is hope that you would want to give us a chance to put our family back together,” Andrew said and shrugged.

Now that the shock had worn off, the anger was quickly rising to the surface. “Let me make sure I understand this correctly. You cheated on me with Lindsay for whatever your reasons were, but you never really liked or loved her, and even though you proposed and married her, you wanted me back? Do you even see what a douche move that is? Lindsay adores you, always has, and you would toss her aside now to get back together with me.” She couldn’t believe that she was defending Lindsay’s honor. Hell had frozen over. That was the only explanation.

“To put our family back together, yes, but when you say it like that, it makes me sound like an asshole.” He crossed his arms, and she shook her head, unable to wrap her mind around his logic.

“Andrew, that’s because it is an asshole move. It doesn’t just sound like it.” She blew out a long puff of air. “This is not why we are here. I wanted you to know that Kyle’s surgery will be next week. I’ll send you all the details to sign off on.” Reaching down, she grabbed the fallen lamp and set it back on her desk. She needed to buy a lottery ticket because the bulb hadn’t even broken. Sitting down, she grabbed the paperwork on her desk, then slowly looked up when she realized that Andrew hadn’t moved.

“What are you still doing standing there?”

“You won’t even give it any consideration?”

She gave Andrew a pointed look. “No.”

“Why not? I mean…” he started, sounding like a whining child who wasn’t getting his way.

“For fuck’s sake, Andrew, I’m with someone else, and unlike you, I’m happy. I have no interest in getting back together ever. You burned that bridge…No, actually, you blew it the fuck up and then set the remaining pieces on fire when you challenged me the first time for sole custody. Never mind the damage you’ve done this time around. Now get out of my office. I have work to do.”

Andrew’s face had begun to redden again, but whatever he was going to say was interrupted as the door opened. Trev stood in the doorway like a looming sentinel, his eyes boring holes into Andrew.

Stomping across the floor, he made a spectacle of leaving, but she called his name when he reached the door. “Oh, and Andrew?”

He turned to face her.

“I’ll be visiting Kyle later today.”

Turning on his heel, he stomped out the door and brushed past Trev. If only Andrew knew that any of her Righteous brothers would kill him if he pushed too hard. She wasn’t prepared to go there. At least not yet.

“He’s so charming,” Trev said, his dry sarcasm pulling up the corner of her mouth.

Of all the things Andrew could’ve said today, wanting to get back together had not been on her list of possibilities. They had their moment, but it was over, and she’d moved on a long ass time ago.

“You’re mine. From now on, you’re only mine,” he whispered in her ear. “I’ll love you with my last breath and protect you until my heart stops beating,” Wolf said and smoothed back Maeve’s dark hair. Smiling, he kissed her lips, but then the image dissolved before his eyes.

“No, Maeve, don’t go,” he yelled, but it was too late. She was gone.

The image took on new life, and as it cleared, he was behind the wheel of his Hummer.

He looked over at Maeve, and as their eyes met, the Hummer jerked hard, the back end swinging wildly. Sparks flew into the air as the last of the tires’ rubber ripped off the rims. He tried to hold the vehicle steady on the road, but there was no controlling it now, and as the rims hit the soft shoulder, the Hummer flew off the road, heading for the steep embankment. Reaching out, he held his arm over Maeve in a last-ditch effort to protect her one last time.

Wolf sat up straight with a gasp. “Maeve,” he said and then grabbed his pounding head. It felt like someone was trying to stab him in the eye. “Shit.”

Duke whined as his golden eyes stared back at him in the darkened room.

“I need Morry.”
