“It’s fine.”

Words. Use words, Trey.

I managed a single, “But . . .”

“It’s not a but.” She stepped farther into the bathroom, joining me in looking into the mirror at my reflection. “However, most people have one feature of their face that is their best feature, and you should want to highlight that, right?”

My curiosity was piqued as to why she had so much to say about hair gel, and I replied with a simple, “Right.”

“If a woman has nice eyes but a big nose, she should apply her makeup in a way that draws attention to her eyes, while at the same time minimizes the focus on her nose.”

I stared down my nose at my reflection. “Is this your passive-aggressive way of telling me I have a big nose?”

“No. I’m saying when you spike your hair up, it draws attention to your hair, and it’s okay.” She offered a lazy one-shoulder shrug. “It does take away the focus from your best feature, though.”

I blinked, feeling flattered. “So, that’s your passive-aggressive way to say I have nice eyes?”

Shaking her head the slightest bit, her eyes dropped to my mouth, lingering there. “From a female perspective, your best feature is your lips.”

Torture.

Absolute agony watching her stare at my lips. I stood frozen—no,incapacitatedby her lasers again—not really knowing what was happening or even what she was talking about anymore. I was mostly sure we weren’t talking about hair gel at this point, but I had fast become a huge fan of it because it made her look at my lips like that.

We weren’t talking anymore.

We stood cemented in our places, hanging onto the moment.

I did know one thing.

I was an expert in code.

And she told me I had nice lips.

That wasclearlycode for her wanting to kiss me.

Kissing wasn’t rational, though, and clearly so unprofessional.

An HR nightmare waiting to implode.

Did I care about that?I pondered, as I felt a rush surge through my chest. I wasn’t a total stranger to this feeling of lightness in my body. I had this feeling before, anticipation that steals the air in your lungs. It’s akin to that sensation you get when you slowly hike up a wooden roller coaster. In the last lingering moment right before you crest, you pause and grip the rails, bracing for the fall. The ensuing rush of emotions—fear enmeshed with excitement, and the heated rush of living life to its fullest.

Yeah, all I cared about was the way she was looking at me.

She ruined the momentagainby breaking the silence. “Did you have more meetings today?”

“Uh, no, I’m going to run out and meet Tonya for lunch.” My words spewed out and I instantly regretted them, but I wasn’t sure why.

No, I did know why!

She had just told me I had nice lips!

Keep your fat mouth shut and let her look at my lips!

“Oh.” She lightly tugged on her earlobe as she shuffled her feet, taking a step closer to the door. “I’ll let you get ready.”

My tongue got knotted and I wanted to beg her to come back, but nothing worked and as quietly as she had appeared, she had left!

I was so stupid!
