AfterdroppingTreybackoff at his house, I drove home in silence. Josiah was in the back seat, but he appeared lost in his own world as he gazed out the window. I’m sure the school tour had him thinking about all kinds of things. I wasn’t going to pry. It was a lot to process. He’d tell me when he was ready.

I—on the other hand—felt like my heart had been bowled over by a planet-sized ball with spikes. I was so heart sick it should not have been legal for me to drive in this state.

I never saw Trey coming.

He was never in my plan, and even though I had been wrestling with this weird attraction to him for a while, it wasn’t anything I couldn’t restrain. There was no way I could keep these feelings in my heart contained after a day like today.

There was also no way to explain what Trey did today—for meand Josiah—without thinking there was something hidden in his intentions. No boss would be that thoughtful. Even if they were rich, they’d cut a check for a bonus and call it good.

This wasn’t about a job anymore.

I chewed on the end of my thumbnail as I pulled into my driveway and putmy car—the car Trey had just given me—into park. This would have been enough, but he didn’t stop there.

He included Josiah.

I’m done.

Feelings for Trey were unleashed.

Trey

Ataliefinishedtherestof the week off, but she did text me several photos of her driving her new wheels. She was obviously enjoying it, which made me happy I could do that for her. I stayed busy making arrangements to install Robert as vice president of my company. That required tying up a lot of loose ends and as part of one of them, I called Evan.

“Sup?” he answered.

“Did you get my email about my needing another computer for Robert?”

“I did, but it’s my new normal to take two days to read your emails, and I give myself another week to reflect on your requests before I require myself to respond. Your expectation of instant gratification is no longer compatible with my life goals.”

“You overslept?”

“Nah, I didn’t want to work.”

“Nice life.”

“I don’t mind it. Actually, I was fired from my first job for bringing my infamous we-should-all-quit vibe to work. I’ve always been an overachiever in slacking, and I wouldn’t want to quit now.”

“Does your busy schedule allow you to squeeze in your only client?” I smarted back.

He let out a sigh like he was being deeply inconvenienced. “I’m obviously booked today, but I should be able to drop it off tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow is perfect.”

His voice rolled out in a low chuckle like he was about to cut into a giant piece of perfectly cook meat. “Then you can introduce me to your new maid.”

My head jolted like I needed to check my hearing. “My what?”

“Didn’t you say you got a new maid?”

My chest constricted when I understood he was asking me about Atalie. Suddenly, I felt protective of her. “Yeah . . . I did, but you can’t . . . meet her.”

“Just because you have had a girlfriend forever doesn’t mean you can’t empathize with us eternally single people.”

“I don’t have a girlfriend anymore,” I said, realizing how weird that felt to say out loud. It was totally bizarre I was more affected by him asking about Atalie.

“What?”
