Dear Amanda Bailey,
I understand you reached out to Duncan Seyfried at Neville Reed about the Alperton Angels case. Several years ago my late husband Mark Dunning wroteWhite Wings, a popular espionage novel partially inspired by it. You’ll have heard the very sad news that he recently passed.
I didn’t intend to respond to your email while I still felt so raw. But a strange thing happened last night and I have a strong feeling I should get in touch.
We hosted Mark’s memorial yesterday, and after everyone had gone home I wandered into his office where everything was exactly as he’d left it the day he died. I sat at his desk and wondered how I’deversort out the mountain of paperwork he’d accumulated. My husband never filed anything or threw it away. Notes, printouts, research, letters, forty years of it. Now and again he’d sweep a stack or two off his desk and into box files, which he then shoved on to a shelf. I wondered if I should simply burn the lot. I cried at the thought.
Through my tears I reached up and hauled out the nearest box file – literally at random – and opened it. My heart sank at the mess of papers inside. Yet I looked closer and stopped dead. There in front of me were Mark’s notes forWhite Wings. I immediately remembered your email and my blood ran cold. My husband wrote thirty-nine books, yet thefirstbox file I look in contains exactly what you asked me for. I’m not a strong believer in the supernatural, but I think Mark wants you to have this and handed it to me – knowing I’d never locate the material otherwise. If you give me your home address, I will send it to you.
