While his body was in deep shock, his pulse and respiration were at such low levels that even a paramedic saw no vital signs on cursory examination.

Each shot increases the probability of glitches in the mechanism that can impede bullet velocity and reduce its capacity to penetrate the skull. Gabriel lucked out because there was only one sniper to kill three people and he was the last to be shot, that’s all.
