The Master Brewer was a hotel and function centre situated on a flyover of the M40 motorway at a place now known as Hillingdon Circus. It’s not only a junction on one of London’s key arterial motorways, it’s alsoa transport hub with nationwide coaches and the London Underground nearby.

‘In festive ark’ has stumped us, but Julie Gormley, one of our newer members, thinks ‘festive’ may mean Holly and ‘ark’ may mean the archangel Gabriel.

The telephone number bears an old London dialling code based at the South Harrow telephone exchange, but with its reach far into the surrounding area, we can’t pinpoint the location any more accurately than this.

We think the Master Brewer is being indicated as the venue for something clandestine. It was an ideal place for a quick exchange and easy getaway, either into or out of London.

Whatever the Alperton Angels were doing in 2003, they were also doing thirteen years earlier, in 1990. What was it, and why did it go so wrong after flying under the radar so long?

We are dying to know what you think of this, Amanda, and look forward to hearing from you.

SUBJECT:Re: The Mystery of the Alperton Angels

FROM:Amanda Bailey

Dear Cathy-June,

Thank you. Especially to Rob Jolley for finding that classified ad. I can imagine what a task he had locating something so small.

What you’ve found has chimed with what I’ve noticed. Some police officers and social workers I know have spoken about ‘angel’ activity in the early 1990s. Twenty or thirty years later their memories are merging with what happened in 2003.

So, 1990 is the height of acid house music. Illegal raves were held around the outskirts of London and the Home Counties every weekend. This local newspaper was published on a Friday. The message could indicate a meeting point for music fans. If they called that number from a phone box once they arrived, they’d be given the exact location of the rave. The ad appeared week after week – same meeting place each week.Equally, it could be a transaction point for drug dealers exploiting that scene.

Angels fly over the Master Brewer. I’m originally from the area myself and remember the Master Brewer hotel. It’s both a specific place, yet a large area, much of it inaccessible due to the motorway intersection and the railway bridge. There are few meeting places for large numbers of people. The hotel had a car park, but if young music fans gathered there the police would soon be called and the meeting point closed down.

I can’t help thinking, though, it’s like the warehouse in Alperton. It’s like Middlesex House where Harpinder Singh was found. It’s an area of transition. Any people there are inevitably on their way somewhere else, and that makes it an ideal place to go unnoticed.

Thanks again, Cathy-June, and thanks to your murder club too. Some things feel clearer now.

All the best,

Amanda Bailey

SUBJECT:The beast

FROM:Oliver Menzies

OK, so this is my problem with the Antichrist. How could Gabriel be sosurethe baby woulddefinitelygrow up to be evil? Because if someone gave it to me and said, ‘This kid’s the beast, it’ll destroy the world’, I’d just make sure it never left the farm, if you see what I mean. Keep it down, stop itdoinganything.

But while I’m at it, some other kid grows up somewhere with rubbish parents and a chip on its shoulder and itbecomesthe ‘beast’ that destroys the world. How does Gabriel’s prophecy take into account factors we know are fundamental to human development, such as upbringing, opportunity, luck, personality, etc.? Interested in your thoughts.

Also: think about this. Our world is on the cusp of the Age of Aquarius. A time when the universe favours female power. The new

Antichrist could be a woman.
