It shone as brightly as any treasure. Her heart pounded, her lips parted … her wings wrapped her in the certain knowledge she had done everything Gabriel asked of her and together they would take this … thing and make it vanish.

INT. LIVING ROOM, FLAT – EVENING
Gabriel looks dishevelled. He sits at the kitchen counter, stares at Jonah and Holly over his coffee mug.
GABRIEL
Did she look official? Police, council, social services?
Holly and Jonah shrug. Gabriel sighs non-committally.
GABRIEL
She must have been sent to rescue the Antichrist … When they send someone it’s usually a woman.
JONAH
Why? When they’re weaker.
Holly looks from Jonah to Gabriel.
GABRIEL
Because in the mortal realm, theirpowers are mortal too, like us. If they use force we resist, so they use charm. Most of us are men and in the mortal world women distract men from their purpose.
He twinkles at Holly.
GABRIEL
No offence.
JONAH
(nods at Holly)
How comeshe’sa woman?
Holly looks to Gabriel, the same question in her eyes.
GABRIEL
Her purpose is to look after a baby, so she chose to be a mortal female (he indicates Jonah) with a protector.
JONAH
You saidmypurpose is to protect the baby.
GABRIEL
We all have that purpose. Our energy forms a shield around it.
HOLLY
But protecting something so evil doesn’t make sense.
Gabriel searches for words to explain the unexplainable.
