OM:There’s something in the air here. I can feel it. [Rustling of a sweet packet. EC]

AB:You can smell my aniseed cubes. Here.

OM:Cheers. [More rustling. EC]

AB:Come on, let’s go. We need to find the angels’ original apartment.

Conversation between me and Oliver Menzies, as we walk through a busy high street, 22 July 2021. Transcribed with difficulty by Ellie Cooper.

AB:Peter Duffy, aka Gabriel Angelis, lived in this block after he was released from prison, courtesy of a housing association. This is where they were when Holly had the baby. Then they moved to a derelict block in Wembley, and finally to the Alperton warehouse, via Middlesex House across the road. They behaved as if they were on the run, but there’s no evidence they were actually being pursued.

OM:Not by earthly forces.

AB:If you read between the lines of Holly and Jonah’s testimonies, you can see the adult angels created a paranoid environment. The kids were convinced there were dark forces closing in who would protect the Antichrist and destroythem.

OM:They needed the alignment to kill it for good.

AB:We’ve assumed the adult angels believed that too, but …

OM:What?

AB:Let’s say theydidn’tbelieve it. Would they lie just to maintain control? The psychology of cult leaders is complex. Power, sex, acquisition of wealth, delusions of grandeur. It’s all there with Gabriel. The teenagers were vulnerable, but no doubt, in their own ways, the others were too.

OM:Head’s spinning, Mand. Need to sit down.

AB:Sure, sure. Over here. [A pause while you help him. EC]

OM:Happens every time … every time I get near to the angels.

I don’t have any inside information about this case, but it’s always intrigued me. The angels. How did such a disparate group of individuals even meet, let alone come to such an out-there belief in their own divinity? Gabriel must be a truly charismatic, influential and dangerous man.

This text reply came out of the blue from former social worker Ruth Charalambos (who I last spoke to on 21 July), 23 July 2021:

Hi, Mand. My friend says thanks for the bank transfer and has come back with his cleaned-up file from Oliver’s visit with Gabriel. I’ve transcribed it and sent both files to your Dropbox. If you fancy a chat when you’ve read it, call me or text.

Ellie Cooper

Call me anyway, please

Improved recording of Oliver’s meeting with Gabriel at HMP Tynefield on 10 July 2021. Transcribed by Ellie Cooper, 24 July 2021.

[It starts midway into a conversation, as if Oliver forgot to start the recording. EC]

GA:… yours is to be a comfort to your father in the final years of his life. Which you’ve done and you can feel proud of that. Your purpose is complete, Oliver.
