Text message to Mr Blue, 5 July 2021:

Amanda Bailey

Dear Mr Blue, I’m very sorry for the confused messages you received from my phone late Saturday night. It was in my pocket, unlocked, and my rubberised key fob knocked against it. Please be assured I am still very keen to locate the three young people from the Alperton Angels case, but especially, and most urgently, the baby. Any information you can give me to this end will be very gratefully received. Again, many apologies for my phone.

Phone interview with Julian Nowak, a social worker, 5 July 2021. Transcribed by Ellie Cooper.

[I’d usually cut out pleasantries and small talk, but there wasn’t any. EC]

JN:Who gave you my name?

AB:I’m in touch with several people across police and social services.

JN:Who mentioned me? Why me in particular?

AB:I can’t say, or they’ll not trust me again.

JN:[Silence. He’s not happy. EC] I’m not happy to be associated with this case. I wasn’t responsible for the failures just because I spoke out about them.

AB:I know … What is it about Holly’s case that still rankles?

JN:You see something happen. You can choose to escalate it and bring down a ton of bricks on your own head, or you can pretend you never saw it and …

AB:Nothing happens, sure …

JN:And the kid fights to stay with their inappropriate boyfriend. So …

AB:I know, I mean it’s …

JN:All we did was respect Holly’s choice. She chose to go off with him and we respected that.

AB:With Jonah?

JN:His name was Gabriel. [Bit of a pause while you both consider what he’s said. EC]

AB:When did the relationship begin?

JN:I don’t know.

AB:The Alperton Angels case was December 2003.

JN:I dealt with Holly not long after I qualified. Early nineties.

AB:It must’ve been later than that. [I cut out various frosty pleasantries before he hangs up. EC] Ellie, I don’t think we were talking about the same case. Don must’ve got social workers mixed up.

[I’d already transcribed this, so sending it to you anyway. EC]
