The Baby sleeps in its Moses basket. Gabriel shoves Holly and Jonah on to the sofa, paces, thinks.
GABRIEL
I never said kill anyone, I never said that.
JONAH
It might rise up again.
HOLLY
They’ll send others.
Gabriel looks at their faces, open and innocent.
GABRIEL
I need to call someone. Wait here.
Gabriel makes as if to leave the room …
JONAH
We did the right thing, didn’t we?
Gabriel’s look is unreadable.
When I opened the safe deposit box on 8 September 2021, I discovered the documents you’ve just read up to 6 September 2021. The only other item was one of Amanda’s business cards. It appeared ordinary at first, but on the reverse were two white feathers, taped firmly to the paper. Under one, she’d written: ‘Found behind the Ballot Box pub on 13 July, while waiting for Mr Blue. It glowed luminous on the path in front of me.’
Under the other feather, she’d written: ‘Found on the shoulder of Ol’s jacket as we queued to see Gabriel in HMP Tynefield.’
