When Nora and little Kate moved away, we kept in touch, but time and distance, like everything else, pushes people in different directions. We often spoke about checking on Nora and little Kate, but we knew their lives were on a set path and wanted to give them their memories together. So, we focused on our own blossoming family and left the future in the past.
Kate pulls the phone out again and glances at the time. She heaves a sigh and sips her cocoa.
“Shall we retire?” I rest my hand on her thigh.
She stares at me over her silver rimmed glasses and shakes her head. “You’re still a randy old goat.”
“Your magic still works on me, love.” I grin, but it softens when I see the concern in her eyes. “Don’t worry about her. It’ll work out.”
“I know.” Unlocking her phone, Kate pulls up the directory. Before I can stop her, she’s hit the call button.
“Kate.” I reach for the phone, but she jerks it away. My voice softens. “Let it go, sweetheart.”
The phone rings a few more times. Kate’s eyes fill with tears.
“You already know how this story ends.” I take her hand and kiss her fingertips.
She sobs and ends the call, tossing the phone aside. I gather her into my arms and hold her against me.
“I love you, Kate.”
“I love you too, Arthur.”
“Thanks for the memories.” I kiss her tenderly. “And the spoilers.”
“Let’s text the kids and go to bed.”
I slide my hand over her hip and squeeze her backside. “Good idea. I’ve got plans for you, sweetheart.”
Outside in the streets, the city erupts into celebration as the new year arrives right on time.
