She meows as I pet behind her ear, then bolts to the floor, running across the room. It’ll be interesting having two nocturnal beings sharing space if she continues to come around. After a few hours of hyperactivity and lots of crying to leave, I walk into the cabin with the cat resting on my shoulder, walking toward Kylo alone in his kitchen.
“Mornin. Where’s the food for this beast? Maybe she’ll shut up if I feed her.”
He raises a brow at me. “First, why do you have Sadie’s cat?” Kylo asks.
“She followed me home earlier when I came to steal coffee.”
“You know, those grounds aren’t cheap.”
“Yes, and I thank thee for the full-bodied brew to touch my tongue—tastes almost as good as a woman. Almost—” I suck a sharp breath as the cat gears her claws into my shoulder and leaps to the floor, prancing up to Sadie.
“Hey, pretty girl. I heard you made a new friend,” she says, glancing at me.
I don’t usually come to the cabin when Kylo has his clients over, but something about Sadie is inviting. Or, it’s because my best bud hasn’t stopped looking at her since she entered the premises. Professional Kylo is definitely not in the building.
“She has good taste. I enjoyed her company until she took a shit in one of my plants.”
Sadie gasps. “Jinx! I’m so sorry. She’s an outside cat, so I don’t use a litter box—”
Chuckling, I wave it off. “No big deal, she’s cool.”
“Are you sure? I’ll replace it.”
“It’s nature. Animals shit on plants all the time.”
I smirk as Sadie giggles and kisses Jinx on the head.
“Okay. While I have you, do you have a minute to discuss rides?”
Nodding, I gesture for her to sit on the couch and sit beside her. “What’s your schedule like?”
“I work weekends 6 p.m., and I’m out by midnight, 2 a.m. the latest—”
Jinx turns her head toward the kitchen, scrambling from Sadie’s hold to eat her meal when Kylo opens a can of food.
“Jinx!” Sadie groans. “Off the counter.”
“Our girl is a handful.”
She smiles and lets out a deep breath. “Yeah, this is all new for both of us. Sorry if she was bothering you over at your place.”
“No bother. It was nice having the company.”
“Okay. That’s good, at least.” Sadie’s phone rings, and she silences the call, placing the device between her thighs. “Um, back to work. Don’t worry if the pick-up time is too late. My friend Evie can bring me back, and I’m off on Sundays.”
Evie…is it a coincidence that the woman who’s caught my eye happens to be friends with Sadie? Even her name is beautiful.
“I’m not picking up the next two shifts, but on Friday evening, would you mind bringing me? You could come inside, grab a drink—on the house, of course.”
Sounds like a good plan.“Sure, no problem.”
“Great, thank you, Lex. I appreciate your help. I should buy myself a car now that I’m on my own. I never drove when I was with—”
Her face drops before she glances at Kylo, and I bet her mood change has something to do with an ex. He must’ve been a dick if even the thought of him still affects her this way.
“Come with me,” Kylo says, holding out his hand. “I want to show you something.”
If anyone can make her forget, it’s Kylo. Sadie’s smile returns before she places her hand in his, and they head for the basement. I’ll need to announce my presence before entering the cabin after today because they both got that twinkle in their eyes. Who knows what’ll go down here at any given moment. Heading toward the back door, I stop before leaving, whistle, and Jinx runs to my side, walking with me up the pathway.
